NASHVILLE, TN (Future150) -- The champions of the Next Level Hoop Fest are Kentucky's Ballard Bruins. They defeated hosts C.P.A. 99-76.
If Jalen Perry's New Year's Eve performance had to be described by one 90's supernatural drama it would be Touched by an Angel. Heavenly orbs hovered above the carbon steel alloy halo, only to drop through. Again and again and again.
Not since the original Journey has a lead singer bearing the Perry name hit every note so pure. Sorry Katie. At one point JP was hitting leaners from 18' followed by jumpers from either wing. In the third quarter Perry appeared unable to miss.
"Basically just finding my rhythm," said Perry afterward. "I had to make sure I could find space. Just basically creating separation with step backs or the dribble."
When the dust settled Perry was credited with 41 points on 8-12 from beyond the arc. He hit 66.7% of his three-point shots in a championship game on the opponent's home court.
"I think he played phenomenal," said teammate Anthony Eaves. "He stepped up big time."
Perry said he incorporated the step back jumper over the summer. Great scorers add new wrinkles every year.
Nearly forgotten was a unfriendly dunk by the mild-mannered Perry. As Ballard High was stepping on the gas pedal Perry caught an outlet pass near midcourt. Not a hint of hesitation accompanied him to the bucket. Perry climbed into the skies and stuffed it through the halo. Even though Christ Presbyterian Academy's hopes were sneaking out into the winter night, Ballard and Perry's were merely festering. Like a nasty infection there was no cure.
Supporting cast
Wednesday night Ballard High burst out of the gate, 19-8. Point guard Anthony Eaves supplied the jolt. With uncommon speed he attacked the defense. Senior Corey Douglas pounded home dunk after dunk. On just 13 shots, Douglas amassed 20 points. Eaves helped with 15 points and Brian Alvey accumulated eight assists.
Hosts manage two wins
With North Carolina Head Coach Roy Williams on hand, Braxton Blackwell scored 27 points, collected eight rebounds, and dished out seven assists. He did commit six turnovers. With Tyger Campbell just back from injury, Blackwell handled the ball more than usual. He set up teammates and slashed occasionally.
"It was real good going against Braxton," said Perry.
Generally, Blackwell draws more fouls from his powerful cuts to the basket. The elite forward was not the reason C.P.A. lost though. His contributions were significant against a hot-shooting visitor. Blackwell's most recent offer was from Louisville. He ranks #40 in the Class of 2016 Future150.
Evan Ragsdale knocked down five triples to help his Lions along. Spot-up shooter Micah Davis missed more than usual in the final. He finished with nine points and could have been the second scorer the squad needed. Davis was a large reason the Lions defeated Mentor two days earlier. He will play college basketball for Indiana Wesleyan (DII).
A top ten Class of 2019 player, Campbell finished with four points, three assists, and four turnovers in 14 minutes of action. He missed the previous two tournament games with a right ankle injury. He did not start.
The spoils of victory
Next Level adorned the victorious Bruins of Ballard with shirts, hats, and possibly the biggest trophy in the history of trophies. A golden backboard was handed to the eager recipients. Was it painted golden? Found in some unknown mines beneath Springfield, Massachusetts? Reports vary at this time.
Perry was handed the MVP Trophy following the Public Address announcer revealing the All-Tournament Team, but he earned it during the third quarter. A silly, endearing moment occurred seconds earlier. As he heard, 'the champions of Ballard' from the speakers, Dmardrick Douglas pridefully walked out to the trophy circle. Justifiably eager to receive the championship award, Douglas was accidentally responding to Perry's MVP announcement. Douglas thought it was time for the team, but Perry was first. Douglas' visible epiphany was worthy of a chuckle.
No speeches were needed, but many photos were taken by proud parents and supporters. In successive nights, Ballard managed to knock down Norcross High, Mitchell High, and C.P.A. It was quite a run for a team filled with shooters. They left Nashville and 2014 champions.
