Raleigh, NC (Future150) -- Lehigh has a star right now in CJ McCollum.  He’ll be gone next year, and the Mountain Hawks need to find ways to replace his production.  That search begins now.  It’s highly unlikely they find anyone to replace that star power immediately, but what they can do is add complementary pieces to begin the process, and 2013 small forward Shane Whitfield is part of that process.

Not many people gave it much thought a month ago when Whitfield announced he would be playing his college ball in the Patriot Conference, but the fact is that we should have because he has the chance to be a very good four year player for Brett Reed and his Lehigh program.

The Word of God (NC) wing forward has a solid all-around game and has that winning trait every coach desires.  His versatility and ability to provide production in multiple areas will get him on the floor next year, and his consistent play should make him a very valuable piece in the future.

At 6’7” Whitfield is a great rebounder out of his position and is willing and able to guard multiple positions.  A capable ball handler and good athlete, he is dangerous in the open floor and will put himself in attack mode when the opportunity is there.  The other area of his game that will translate is his passing ability.  He can make plays for people, and that is often hard to find among players with his size and strength.  The sum total is a player who may not stand out in any one particular area but someone who does a lot of different things in many different areas.  And in that way, he does stick out.

Lehigh may have found themselves a steal in this Raleigh native.  They definitely found a winner.  And that’s one great way to start a replacement process.
