New Haven, CT (Future150) -- Every year, the National Prep Showcase serves as the unofficial start to the national high school season. Without fail, players break out and raise their stock, while a number of seniors pick up offers along the way. This year was more of the same, but three big storylines stood out:
Plenty of available 2017 talent in the Northeast
Any mid-major or high-major program in attendence this past weekend likely walked away knowing they added at least one more player to their big board. Brewster Academy products Mike Okauru and Curtis Haywood impressed with their defensive ability, while Haywood knocked down a number of threes. Okauru ran the show at times and showed he may be one of the best available point guards in the country. Maceo Jack has already turned his post-grad year into a success, as his scoring netted him an offer from George Washington. Another available point guard that emerged was Mount Zion's TeShaun Hightower. The Georgia native is capable of scoring and distributing and has the size to be a high major guard. Finally, former FGCU commit Rasheed Browne had a productive weekend as a scorer and could help a mid-major program.
Ole Miss is the Winner of the Weekend
Coming into the weekend, not much was known about Ole Miss commit Jamarko Pickett. The wing had lost the AAU season to injury and didn't get to play a ton. He has sprouted up to 6-foot-8 over the past year or so, and looks like he could be the steal of this class. In front of NBA scouts, he showcased the full arsenal; knocking down threes, rebounding, driving to the rim, and making correct passes. What's scary still is that he looks to be growing into his own frame still. Pickett may end up being an All-SEC player at some point during his career.
The NBA Will Have to Wait For Diallo
Much has been made of if five-star wing Hamidou Diallo would head to college or head to the NBA after this season. It appears that, for now, that arguement can be put to bed.
"Right now, I'm 100 percent going to college", he said at the event.
So where will he end up playing his college ball? That has yet to be decided, but don't be surprised if he ends up at Kentucky as well.
