Pittsburgh, PA (Future150) -- Although it was a short day of games, the competition was fierce during day one of the Pitt Jamfest. Coaches were out in force to evaluate top talent from around the country and get a jump on their 2014 recruiting classes. Here are some of the players who stood out on the first night of play:
Malik Price-Martin 2014 PF, Team Breakdown: Price-Martin showed that he can score from both the block and out on the perimeter Friday night; tallying 18 points in a hard fought loss. The highlight of his night was a thunderous slam over Quadri Moore that brought spectators to their feet. Mark Turgeon was on hand to see Price-Martin turn in a quality performance.
Jared Nickens 2014 SF, Sports U: When Sports U was struggling to score in the first half, it was Nickens who stepped his game up to the next level. Nickens showed an improved handle to go along with his already knock-down shooting ability.
Trayvon Reed 2014 C, Atlanta Xpress: Reed did exactly what he’s known for, protecting the rim and finishing Alley-Oops. He was instrumental in the Xpress’ win over a powerful Team Thad squad on. Reed continues to run the floor very well for a 7-footer, making him very attractive to high major programs.
Jabari McGhee 2014 SF, Atlanta Xpress: While it was Reed who provided the spark for the Xpress on defense, McGhee brought the spark offensively. He displays a toughness that few players have going to the rim and proving that he is a high major player.
Chris Chiozza 2014 PG, Team Thad: Chiozza continues his rapid rise up the rankings while proving he is a top point guard in this class. He is a blur with and without the ball and proved he can be equal parts scorer and distributor. While finishing with 25 points in the loss, Chiozza is a monster on the defensive end as well; forcing 10 turnovers alone.
Grant Bryant 2014 SF, Southen Kings: Bryant was the breakout star of the day as he kept the Southern Kings from dropping a game against Wayne Pal. A 6-foot-7 combo forward, he is an active body who will prove to be a matchup nightmare. His ability to take players off the post and score on the block gave Wayne PAL fits.
.
Matt Millon 2015 SG, Q-6 All-Stars: Millon proved to be one of the better shooters in his class as he rained threes down on the Detroit All-Stars. He also showed that he can take defenders off the dribble and finish at the rim. He looks every bit the part of a high major prospect.
Derrick Brooks Jr. 2014 PG, Q-6 All-Stars: Brooks finished the night with over 10 assists as he was the beneficiary of a hot shooting night from Millon. He rarely turned the ball over and should be a solid point guard on the high-major level. It was Brooks that led his team to the victory tonight.
Stuckey Mosley 2014 CG, Q-6 All-Stars: The talented combo guard showed why he can be such a problem for opposing defenses as he got into the lane seemingly every time he wanted. He played both on and off the ball and not only scored but distributed as well. Look for Stuckey to continue to improve this stock.
Isaiah Whitehead 2014 SG, Juice All-Stars: He could quite possibly be the best pure scorer in the class and his full arsenal was on display Friday night. He had 17 points just at the half after numerous incredible plays at the rim and deep threes. Perhaps the most impressive part of Whitehead’s game was his fast break defense. He recorded three chase-down blocks in the open floor, showing how athletic he really is.
