On Saturday, there were a number of players who played up to their ranking, as well as some under-the-radar players who made their names known. With an extended weekend, this was a big weekend for teams to pick up wins and move up in the standings for a chance to qualify for the Adidas Super 64 in July.
Jaylen Fornes, 2016 SG, Team Loaded (NC): Fornes is a great shooter, and his touch was on display in an early morning game against Mass Rivals on Saturday. He scored it from the mid-range and from beyond the arc and moved well without the ball. On defense he also did a good job of being active and disrupting the opposition.
Jordan Murphy, 2015 SF, Texas D1 Ambassadors: A name that has been flying under-the-radar on the national level, Murphy already claims offers from much of the Big XII. Over the weekend, he showed why, as he scored in a variety of ways. Murphy helped to lead his team to a big win over Game Elite by getting to the rim and scoring from the high post area as well. He is definitely one to keep an eye on in the coming months.
Wenyen Gabriel, 2016 CF, Mass Rivals: Gabriel is potentially the breakout player of this weekend, as the forward did everything for his team during their games. He is a solid 6-foot-8 and showed the ability to put the ball on the floor, shoot the mid-range jumper, and rebound. Defensively, he is a high energy forward who is capable of guarding numerous positions and talks on defense. In a program that has produced a slew of quality talent in past years, it appears Wenyen could be one of the best to come out of their ranks in the near future.
Sedrick Barefield, 2015 PG, Compton Magic: After his performance on Saturday afternoon, Larry Brown and SMU fans should be really excited that Barefield is entering the fold. He is an excellent leader who has good body control and is able to finish around and through contact at the rim. He knows how to run the offense and find his teammates as well. With a high basketball IQ, he will be a quality addition to the Mustangs.
Chase Jeter, 2015 PF, Dreamvision: Perhaps no player has improved as much as Chase Jeter has in the past year, and it shows. In a big match-up vs Carlton Bragg, it was Jeter that got the best of it. He was assertive in the post and showed the ability to score on the block with a series of post moves. Jeter has also become more aggressive on the defensive end and more of a rim protector. He seems bound for a top ten ranking when we update them in the coming weeks.
Goanar Mar, 2017 SF, D1 Minnesota: Mar made this list thanks to his solid play on Saturday. His versatility is his calling card right now and it’s easy to see why local schools have begun to invite him to their elite camps so they can get a better look at him. At 6-foot-6 he is still growing and looks comfortable on the perimeter. He has great length and is a high energy forward who is a good defender. There is a lot of upside to his game and he has only begun to scratch the surface.
T.J. Leaf, 2016 SF, Compton Magic: The 6-foot-9 forward had a huge weekend in Orlando. He proved that he is without a doubt one of the most skilled prospects in the country for his class, and he puts up numbers every time he touches the floor. Right now, Arizona, Indiana, UCLA & Michigan are pursuing him the hardest, but his recruitment seems far from over.
Kentrell Barkley, 2015 SF, Team Loaded Virginia: On a talented team, Barkley may have been the most consistent performer in Orlando. A muscular 6-foot-5, he can destroy a defense on all three levels. He is a physical rebounder and finisher around the rim, but is also capable of knocking down shots from the outside as well. Middle Tennessee State is the latest school to offer, but you can bet there will be several mid-major programs about to get involved after his big spring.
Craig Randall, 2015 PG, Ohio Basketball Club: The 6-foot-2 southpaw has made great strides in his game since last summer. He has sprouted a few inches and added speed to his arsenal, as well as improving his jumper. While he has always been a very good facilitator, his ability to break down the defense and knock down shots has now made him a very appealing prospect in the Midwest. Schools such as St. Joe's, Drexel & Akron are all vying for his services.
Mario Kegler, 2016 SG, MBA Hoops: Currently ranked as the #9 prospect in the sophomore class, the 6-foot-7 wing is living up to the early hype. He is as talented a scorer on the wing that we have seen for his age group, and he continues to make strides in his game. While it's early, Arizona, Baylor, Ohio State, Tennessee & Texas have all offered, while Duke is showing interest.
