Second-seeded Winston-Salem Prep took care of business in Wednesday’s first round of the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic at Mount Tabor, beating overmatched Reynolds 68-41 in a game that featured what Coach Andre Gould of Prep called “the best backcourt around.”
There couldn’t be a lot of argument after Raekwon Harney and Mike Hughes led a strong second-half performance that kept the Phoenix unbeaten and lifted them to their 10 th win of the season.
Harney, Prep’s point guard, scored eight of his 12 points in a 2½-minute span early in the third quarter to keep the Demons at bay, and Hughes, a smooth shooting guard, scored six of his 14 points in a 12-2 run at the start of the fourth quarter that put Reynolds away for good.
The Phoenix also got a game-high 16 points from Aaron Lipscomb, who hit four of nine 3-point shots, and they outrebounded a smaller Reynolds team 40-25.
