New York, NY (Future150) -- It’s not often that players from California make the cross country trip to New York City to attend a showcase or camp. It’s even less likely when that player is considered to be the top player in his class. Despite the odds, Cody Riley did just that, participating in the Jim Couch Showcase recently.

“It was a great experience going against great players from all over the country,” he said.

At 6-foot-8 with a solid frame, Riley looks like a man amongst boys when standing next to his peers. The power forward has the ability to take players off the dribble as well as score with his back to the basket. Due to his size he is also an elite level rebounder and defender. While his jumper is still a work in progress, he is steadily becoming more confident in it.

This summer Cody and a couple of his high school teammates took visits to Duke and North Carolina State.

“It was a great time, the campus was really nice and it was great getting to know coach Wojo,” said Riley of his experience at Duke.

Despite their big man coach playing guard his entire life, Riley is still very much interested in the Blue Devils and what they have to offer. Make no mistake though, it is still early in the process and he is very open to more schools getting involved.

Arizona, USC, and Kansas have all extended offers according to the youngster, while Washington, Duke, UCLA, and N.C. State have all shown various amounts of interest as well. Originally a native of Kansas, there are some ties to the Jayhawks program as well.

On the AAU circuit he runs with the California Basketball Club with a few of his Sierra Canyon (CA) teammates, forming one of the top young groups of players in the country. His high school coach, Ty Nichols, had this to say about his young forward.

“Cody is a special kid and immensely talented, he can be as good as he wants to be. He is a dream to coach as well, and just a great kid to be around.”

Time will tell whether or not he will be able to hold onto the number one spot in his class, but one thing is clear; the sky is the limit for Cody Riley.
