Baltimore, MD (Future150) -- This past weekend was the inaugural session of Elevate Hoops’ The Proving Ground. Held in Baltimore, the league got off to a fantastic start and looks to be one of the premier middle school events in the country. The 13U division was very talented, and a number of teams got off to a hot start in the first session. With that in mind, Future150 takes a look at the big takeaways from the 13U division:

It’s all about the U

This Sports U team is a really balanced group as evidenced by their first day. Out of the seven players, no one averaged over 13 points, and no one averaged less than 3. This group is really just gelling now, which is a scary thought.  Trey Patterson made a solid case as one of the top 2021s nationally, as he averaged 9 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists on the first day. Sports U may be the favorites to win the 13U division moving forward.  Swingman Shane Dezonie is one to keep an eye on as well.

Baltimore United Closes Strong at Home

The new UA sponsored program started off 1-1 on the first day after running into the buzzsaw that is Sports U, but bounced back on day 2. 6-foot-7 big man DeTwan Montague and company went 2-0 on Sunday, including a big win over D.C. Premier that was a rematch of last week’s MIT championship. United looks to be one of the few teams that can trade blows with the Sports U crew moving forward, and it will be interesting to see how they fair the rest of the season.

Competitors out of Canada?

Canada Elite-Orange went 3-1 over the weekend, notching a win over D.C. Premier in the process. Getting off to a hot start was important, as they didn’t have the toughest schedule in the league this weekend. The lone loss came to Baltimore United, giving them the same record and United the tie-breaker. Swingman Mahki Williams was impressive, scoring over 16 points a game all weekend. If he can continue to score at this rate, his team will stay in the hunt.

Session One Most Outstanding Player:  Trey Patterson, 2021 SF, Sports U

Session One Breakout Star: DeTwan Montague, 2021 PF, Baltimore United

Session One “Mr. Reliable”: Mahki Williams, 2021 SG, Canada Elite-Orange

Session One Scoring Machine: Zion Russell, 2021 SG, D.C. Premier
