Philadelphia, PA (Future150) -- Philadelphia has long been known for its great basketball players, most notably Kobe Bryant, Will Chamberlin, and Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, among others. More recently, players such as Tyreke Evans, Jameer Nelson, Dion Waiters, and Scoop Jardine have made professional careers for themselves coming out of the Philadelphia area.
While there are no sure fire pros coming up in the area, it is still an absolutely loaded area that has plenty of division one prospects. One of the better teams in the area is Neumann-Goretti, headlined by Miami commit JaQuan Newton. Backing him up this year is sophomore guard Vaughn Covington. While he may not start, he plays a vital role for the Saints.
He is arguably the team’s best perimeter defender and best pure point guard on the roster. One of the more impressive parts to his game is his ability to make players around him better and fit with the talent on his team. With talented guards like Newton, Lamarr Kimble and freshman Quade Green surrounding him, the onus is on Covington to make sure everyone gets the ball and remains content.
Recently, the Saints made the trip down to the City of Palms tournament in Fort Myers, Florida. While they had an up-and-down week, Covington was one of the more solid players throughout the event. He was assigned to the opposing team’s best perimeter players and guarded the likes of Isaiah Whitehead, Dominque Collier, Grayson Allen, and Jalen Hudson.
While he has yet to receive his first scholarship offer, Xavier, Miami (FL), Villanova, Lehigh, and Holy Cross have all shown varying amounts of interest. With his performance on the national stage and an upcoming game in the Hoophall Classic against powerhouse Mater Dei (CA) coming up this month, it’s only a matter of time before word about him gets out. Covington is also a standout in the classroom, where he boasts a 3.7 GPA. Look for him to have a big AAU season with Team Final this year.
Comments:
Covington is a solid all around point guard. Been watching him mature in the game. His best has yet to come. He also comes from a great set of parents that keep him focused and grounded. His dad was a solid player out of South Jersey. Can’t wait to see Covington in the next two years. He’s gonna be exciting!
YOU GO GRAND SON.I’M VERY PROUD AND HAPPY FOR YOU.
