New Orleans, LA (Future150) -- As the new year approaches, some programs are still focused on closing out the 2016 class, while others have already hit the 2017 class hard on the recruiting trail. The University of New Orleans got a fantastic jump on their 2017 class yesterday, as they locked up their back court of the the Future.
Landry-Walker (LA) point guard Lamont Berzat and Ellender (LA) combo guard Davontavean Martin both took an unofficial visit to campus yesterday and shortly after they left, decided to commit to the local program.
“I have been talking to the coaches every day and I talk to TaeTae everyday to see where his head was at and when he went on his visit today I went there with him and after we left we talked and decided to commit,” said Berzat.
A native of New Orleans, it almost seems as though Berzat had already made his mind up somewhat, and was focused on recruiting his good friend to the program with him. New Orleans should be thrilled, because not only will Berzat provide them with a point guard and high-level defender, but a personality that will certainly look to bring in talent around him and will excite people around the program.
“I’ve known Coach Sless for a long time, since he first became the coach at UNO actually., I would go and train there as a kid and we built a connection and have been talking ever since, Now my goal is to get to the tournament once I get there, and hopefully do really well in it” Berzat said.
Over the summer, Berzat drew some interest from high-major programs. The 5-foot-8 guard played his best on the biggest stages, leading some to believe that he would conquer the questions about his size with his will and ability to just win games. Fortunetly for UNO, Berzat is also the type of kid who understands where he can succeed and is fiercely loyal as well. Those two factors probably had a lot to do in the timing of his decision.
Martin is a big time addition as well. At 6-foot-3, he has freakish athleticism and knows how to fill it up. He will fit really well alongside Berzat, as the two Future150 Alums look to build something special in New Orleans. Don’t be surprised to see the Privateers knocking some high-major programs off in a couple of years, and if they do, Berzat will almost certainly be leading the charge.
