Springfield, MA (Future150) -- With all the talent in the gym at the 2014 Springfield HoopHall Classic, it is easy for people to miss out on the games between local programs before the national ones take center stage. For those who did make it in time to see Putnam (MA), they got a glimpse at a sophomore wing that is currently flying under the radar.

Tyonne Malone may only be in his second year of high school, but it is clear that he is one of the most talented players on his varsity squad. While historically players of his caliber have had a tendency to head to one of the local prep school powerhouses, Malone has stayed true to his roots and remains at his local school.

Coming into high school he had showed promise and now it appears that he is really starting to come along as a player.

“I’ve been working on my three point shot this year. With this group I play as a forward because we’re not that big, but for AAU I play guard, I see myself playing shooting guard down the road,” he said.

At 6-foot-4, there was no mistaking him as a power forward at the next level, but the experience of learning another position should only allow him to become that more dangerous as a player. He rebounds the ball well, can bring it up the floor, and can finish at the rim.

“I’ve had to learn how to play all five positions this year, and I think that has really helped be develop as a player,” said Malone.

This spring, programs such as UConn and Providence will be keeping a close eye on the wing as they continue to evaluate him. UMass, Boston, Manhattan, and St. Peter’s already like what they have seen from him and have extended scholarship offers. He will continue to pick up looks and offers as he will get a chance to play to showcase his skills with the Mass Rivals this year.

It is very early in the decision making process but Malone says that he would like to play his college ball close to home; which isn’t surprising given his choice to stay close to home for high school as well.
