Mableton, GA (Future150) -- Minutes ago Thrae Mitchell selected University of South Alabama.
It was not easy to get noticed for Mitchell (6'5" WG). In a forest of resplendent trees, Thrae was considered fourth or fifth best sapling.
Pebblebrook High School was loaded with D1 talent this winter. Jared Harper (Auburn verbal), Derek Ogbeide (Georgia), and Ty Hudson (Clemson) all laced them up each night. It took a last second free throw from Wheeler High and California-bound Jaylen Brown to yank the AAAAAA Title away from them.
The basketball typically lived in the steady hands of Harper or Hudson. Ogbeide served as the low post threat. Mitchell was stuck somewhere between ball-handler and post option.
A true wing, Mitchell's greatest contributions came from constant effort. He glides around the floor with impressive mobility.
The mid-range shooting of Mitchell surely caught the eye of recruiters. He can score in transition and also shoot off the dribble. Considering his length and agility, Mitchell should morph into an elite Sun Belt Conference defender.
Strengths include offensive rebounding, mid-range shooting, and agility. Weaknesses to Mitchell might be outside shooting and he did not show many post moves.
Playing Time
For South Alabama (12-21, 9-11) Mitchell will have an opportunity to start on the wing. Fellow small forward Nick Stover is coming off a redshirt year after transferring in from Loyola Marymount.
Outgoing senior Dionte Ferguson vacates his 28.1 mpg, opening a glorious opportunity for Mitchell. The Jaguars primarily play one pivot, one wing, and three guards.
Mitchell has found a home.
