GAHANNA, OH (Future150) -- There was a little bit of basketball to be played on Thanksgiving Eve, and it was the perfect appetizer for Turkey Day, as two of the top teams in the city squared off on Wednesday morning, with a Matt Moyer-led Gahanna squad taking on Kaleb Wesson and Westerville South. They played three 16-minute quarters, and ended with a six-minute quarter. With the season just a week away, here are some thoughts from the scrimmage:
- In the early going, it looked as if Westerville South was going to run and dominate the match-up with ease, jumping out to a 16-1 lead. Ed Calo had his team in mid-season form offensively, breaking down the Gahanna zone with no trouble at all. The crisp passing and up-tempo pace for the Wildcats gave the Lions fits early on.
- 2015 G DJ Dingess was a big reason Westerville South jumped out early, knocking down five triples in the opening sixteen minutes. Dingess was open in part due to the zone, but also knocked down some jumpshots with defenders right in his face.
- Gahanna bounced back quickly, and with a vengance, reeling off 16 straight points after being down by 15 in the early going. Syracuse-commit Matthew Moyer was at his finest in the latter part of the first half, knocking down some jumpers but also attacking the rim with force, throwing down two monster dunks.
- After the two teams had their runs, they settled in for a great final seven minutes of play in the first 16-minute frame. The feel of the game was reminisicent of a game in March, rather than November, and the skill level between the two teams made for some interesting basketball.
- The battle of the bigs between South's 2017 C Kaleb Wesson and Gahanna's 2016 C Nick Ward was intriguing and they showcased their talents. Ward is a rebounding machine and alongside Moyer, the two have begun to gel as a dominant high-low game. Wesson is a top player in the state and his game is still growing at a rapid rate.
- 2015 PG Jenisys Battle was a big spark for Gahanna whenever Ward and Moyer were not on the floor, and a catalyst when they were. Battle will need to play the point guard role this year for the Lions, and when he is playing well, Gahanna will definitely be a dominant force in Central Ohio.
