Philadelphia, PA (Future150) -- The second live period kicked off on Wednesday as teams and coaches alike flocked to The Competitive Edge sports complex in King of Prussia for The HoopGroup’s Summer Classic. While the tournament is fairly small in the amount of teams participating, there was a lot of quality talent in action. Here are a few players who stood out:
Tomas Murphy, 2017 PF, Mass Rivals: While it will be a few years before he sees a college floor, Murphy looks like he is going to be a major problem for opposing players from now on. He already has an incredible amount of skill for a player his age, throwing dimes from the high post, rebounding well, and running the floor. He can score facing up or with a little hook shot. Murphy looks to be a cross between his older brothers Alex (Duke) and Erik (Florida).
Paschal Chukwu, 2014 C, CBC: Make no mistake, Chukwu is still very raw on the offensive end. Still, he can help a major college program right away due to his 7-foot-8 wing span and the fact that he’s 7-foot-1. Chukwu should be a good rebounder right off the bat as well as an exceptional shot blocker, which he showed on Wednesday night.
Emmanuel Omogbo, 2014 CF, Mid-Atlantic Select: Omogbo was at it again on Wednesday. He scored it in a variety of ways and gave Expressions all that they could handle. With his improved ball handling, Omogbo has become a matchup nightmare, as he proved during his first two games . Omogbo is a complete and total steal for RMU.
Jared Terrell, 2014 CG, Expressions: Without his usual teammate Abdul Malik-Abu in action, Terrell is the undisputed leader of this team and proved as much as he helped his team to wins in their first two games of the tournament. He attacked the basket incredibly well and showed off an improved jumper, making him more dangerous offensively.
Kaleb Joseph, 2014 PG, Mass Rivals: Kaleb stepped up when his teammates needed him the most in two games that were much closer than the Rivals would’ve liked. Joseph is an explosive guard and a competitor that refuses to go down without a fight and Wednesday night was no different as he scored big basket after big basket.
Dom Uhl, 2014 SF, Jersey Shore Warriors: Uhl is one of the better kept secrets nationally, but most recruitniks on the east coast are well aware of the German forward. He is ultra-skilled and versatile. At 6-foot-8 he handles the ball like a guard yet can score on the block. He was quick enough to take bigger defenders off the bounce and big enough to bully smaller defenders. He is a walking mismatch.
Chance Ellis, 2015 SG, Team Scan: No one scored more than Chance on Wednesday as the wing dropped in 26 in an early round win. Ellis has always been able to shoot, but it looks as though he has slimmed down and his conditioning has gotten better, which was the main concern about him last year. The future has never looked brighter for Ellis.
Conrad Chambers, 2014 PG, Team Scan: With a slew of big name players not running with Scan this weekend it has become Chambers’ turn to lead. The Philly native turned his game up a notch and helped his team make the Elite 8 after two big wins on Wednesday. He still attacks the rim well and plays with a high IQ. Look for Chambers to continue to shine this weekend.
Matt Ryan, 2015 SG, New Heights: A sweet shooting guard from Iona Prep, Ryan hit shots when his team needed him the most. While New Heights was down to CBC midway through the second half it was Ryan that stepped up and hit 4 three pointers to put his team on top for good. He has good size and looks like he is a high major shooter. Notre Dame offered him after his play on Wednesday.
