WHEELING, WV (Future150) -- After scoring a team-high 39 points and 14 rebounds, Jayson Tatum and his Chaminade team was able to make the statement that had been hoping for, knocking off Stevenson (IL) 88-81 in a wild game on Friday at the Cancer Research Classic.
“Last two times we went out of town on the road we lost, we came out to prove a point,” Tatum said after the victory. “We knew we were playing a real good guard, probably the best point guard in the country, he had a great night and put on a show.”
The guard he is referring to is Villanova-commit Jalen Brunson, who set the CRC record with a game-high 48 points, albeit in the loss.
“I’m real good friends with Jalen, I know he’s a hell of a player,” Tatum said of the senior.
Kentucky coach John Calipari was in attendance, and the junior discussed his relationship with the Wildcats and what it meant to have them watch him play Friday.
“It means a lot, he texts and calls me, told me he was going to come up here probably about a week ago,” Tatum said of Calipari. “I’ve built a great relationship with Coach Cal.”
As for other schools not named Kentucky, Tatum discussed a possible official visit to Duke for their match-up on February 28. That would likely be his first official visit, but the Chaminade star does not have a favorite school so far.
““No, I don’t have a favorite, the opportunity just presented itself to take that visit.”
That visit is just the tip of the iceberg, as Tatum still has plenty of places yet to see.
“I know there are schools I want to get to like North Carolina, I haven’t been there, as well as Arizona, UConn, Wake Forest,” Tatum said. “I think I’ve been to all the other schools that are still on my list.”
Cutting the list will be tough, but Tatum says it will happen sometime during AAU season. As for how he will make his decision, there is no definitive description.
“I just really want to weigh my options out, and see what’s the best place for me.”
