Chicago, IL (Future150) -- Coming into this season, Whitney Young (IL) was not only supposed to be one of the best teams in the state, but in the nation as well. While the hype surrounding the team was thanks mostly to the senior trio of Jahlil Okafor, Paul White, and Miles Reynolds; sophomore wing Skyler Nash was considered to be ready to be a major piece of the puzzle as well.
That was before an injury held Nash out for a majority of the season to this point. With Nash , the program was one of the front runners for the City of Palms championship this year. Without him they were closer to the competition. As it turns out, the Dolphins finished third in the tournament and then 2nd in the Les Swchab Invitational out in Oregon. The argument can be made that the young wing’s presence would have made little difference, but no program can lose a high major player and not have that make an impact.
“It’s disappointing not being able to contribute to this team,” Nash said at City of Palms. “This is a great group of guys and I think I could have made a difference out there,” he added. From talking to Nash it is clear that he is more mature than players his age and that he is ready to get back out on the floor.
“I think that I can play with the best of the best,” he said when asked where he felt he fell in the loaded class of 2016. Colleges are inclined to agree with the youngster, as he has drawn interest from Indiana, Michigan, Creighton, Ohio State, Xavier, DePaul, Purdue, and Illinois over the past year.
With the 2014 Hoop Hall Classic coming up in just two weeks and Nash stating he thought he was a couple weeks away from coming back from injury, it will be interesting to see if he suits up in Springfield. A versatile wing, Nash is a good rebounder for a perimeter player and will give the Dolphins another offensive weapon as well. Regardless, it would appear that Whitney Young has its next star in Skyler Nash.
