New York, NY (Future150) -- Canada has taken some big steps in the past few years as far as basketball goes. Not only have more and more natives been exposed to the college game, but the best amateur basketball player in the world in none other than Canadian Andrew Wiggins.
Marial Shayok, a junior originally from Ottawa, may be the next great Canadian to come out. While he is still a rather unknown player, several high-major schools have taken notice of his talents.
“Villanova, Illinois, Gonzaga, Boston College, Dayton, Bradley, and Purdue have offered me,” he told Future150.com.
Several other top programs have shown interest in Shayok, including Kentucky. The coaching staff contacted his father back in July prior to Peach Jam.
At 6-foot-6 with his offensive arsenal, it is easy to see why coaches are in pursuit of him. While Shayok claims no favorites at this time, he can see a couple of schools that are coming at him harder than the rest.
“I would say Villanova and Boston College are recruiting me the hardest. Both schools’ assistants talk to me a lot.”
Shayok has yet to visit any schools, but factors in his recruitment have been discussed. The 2014 star has a unique view of where he will attend college.
“I’m looking for a college to have a system that can challenge me both mentally and physically. I want to improve my knowledge of the game and also become a stronger, faster and overall better basketball player,” he explained.
After starting out the season with a loss at Blair Academy (NJ), Shayok has helped lead his team to three straight wins and a record of 3-1. While it is still early, the wing is expecting some improvement from himself throughout the year.
“I’m working on posting up defenders when I have a height advantage. And I also need to improve my three-point shot. I would like to hit those on a consistent basis.”
