BRADENTON, FL (Future150) -- Romello White (#146) decided earlier today to verbally commit to the University of Tennessee.

"We are very excited," said his mother, Catrece Martinez.  "We are excited about what they are building."

White picked Tennessee over Georgia Tech, Georgia, and Oklahoma.

"Those were some of the schools he was thinking about," said Martinez.  "They are right here.  We spend a lot of time here."

White's family is based in Lawrenceville, Georgia and he began his high school career with Peachtree Ridge High School.  Prior to this academic year his family elected to plant him at I.M.G. Academy, a plant unto itself.

"He is at I.M.G. Academy," said Martinez.  "He really likes the school.  He likes the training because that is what the school is based on, helping students learn about their bodies."

I.M.G. produces college and pro athletes in a variety of sports including tennis, basketball, football, tennis, soccer, and golf.

"He is really going good for them," said Martinez.  "They are up and coming.  A lot of their players are new, as well.  They played Montverde, of course.  They have a good record.  They are doing well."

UT visits

"We love the campus," said Martinez.  "We love the arena."

Thompson-Boling Arena bills itself as the 'the biggest single-sport on campus arena in the country.'  A final round of refurbishments will be completed this year.  The locker rooms are the last detail, but they have not been upgraded since the 1980's.  The project has $15 million allotted to the final sweep of upgrades.  Any improvements will wait until after this current college season wraps.

White's mother loves the location of the basketball and football stadiums.  They are right on the river in a picturesque portion of Tennessee.

"We love the academics, of course," said Martinez.  "We love the coaches, Coach (Donnie) Tyndall.  We kept in touch with them.  The whole system."

White becomes the first University of Tennessee verbal commitment in the Class of 2016.  The team will need to fill at least six scholarships in his class.
