Bronx, NY (Future150) -- The City Legendz Invitational has been one of the more interesting pre-christmas events in New York thanks to the organizers ability to match in-state teams with quality out-of-state competition, as well as pit the Public league against the Catholic league. The end result is a number of really intense games, where a number of players turned in memorable performances. Future150 breaks down the big talking points coming out of the weekend.
Are Lincoln and QHST on a Collision Course?
The PSAL is wide open this season, with a number of schools looking just as talented as the next. Two programs who could be front-runners in their boroughs are Queens High School of Teaching and Lincoln. Both Programs are led by seniors in CJ Kelly and Donald Cannon-Flores, respectively. Both also picked up wins this weekend with Kelly and Cannon-Flores both turning in big performances. There are plenty of other teams who will push these two, namely John Bowne, Thomas Jefferson, Springfield Gardens and Wings Academy, but it's hard not to like these two to make deep runs and potentially meet in the City Finals this year.
Hightower's Recruitment about to take off
TeShaun Hightower was a breakout performer last month at the National Prep Showcase. This weekend he proved his performance wasn't a fluke. The 6-foot-5 swingman make a number of incredible passes while also finishing at the rim and knocking down a handful of jumpers. His size and athleticism are going to make the Mount Zion product incredibly intriguing to high-major programs.
"Things have completely changed for me since NPS, I've had to take a lot of calls lately, it's been kind of crazy," he said.
A number of high-major programs have begun to recruit him already, with quite a few making trips to see him. Look for a full feature on him sometime this week.
Stock Going Up!
A trio of 2018 prospects and one freshman had decent weekends and are guys who are worth tracking moving forward.
Our Savior Lutheran wing Jared Rhoden is in his first year at the Bronx program and has really expanded his game. He can score it on all three levels and rebounded it really well on Sunday. His recruitment will likely see a big uptick this winter and spring.
Monsignor Scanlan has a talented combo guard in SaQuan Singleton, who mid-majors would be wise to keep an eye on. At 6-foot-6, he is a physical slasher who's ability to get into the lane allows him to create scoring opportunities for his teammates. He needs to improve as a shooter, but his form is decent, suggesting that it's more than possible.
Jose Perez is in his final year at Wings Academy, and will be doing a post-grad year elsewhere next season. He would like to go out with a city championship. The 6-foot-6 small forward can put up points in a hurry and showed an intensity not seen from the wing before. It's clear he is on a mission this season, and should pick up a number of offers along the way.
Finally, Lincoln freshman John Wilson has proven that he is going to be an impact player this season. In fact, he may or may not be their 2nd best player already. The half brother of former WVU guard Truck Bryant, Wilson has an advanced game. He makes high level reads and can get into the lane at will, and is surprisngly good and finishing despite having a slim build. He should be a big time player in the future.
