Memphis, TN (Future150) -- Rashaan Benson is used to having the ball in his hands. That is when the junior is at his best, utilizing his amazing court vision and creating for his teammates.
This season, based on necessity, City University High School (TN) is using him less as a facilitator and more as a scorer...and he is thriving.
He has led his team to a 7-5 record so far this season, but they are 5-0 in their district play.
He is averaging 16 points, five assists, and three rebounds per game, and is okay with his new role, as he is continuing to improve and expand his game.
"All around I am a better player than I was at this point during my sophomore year. This year is a little different for me because I am playing in a new offensive system as well as playing off the ball, something that I’ve never done, but it’s for the betterment of my team," he told Future150.
"Naturally, I am a pass first point guard but because of the system, I am relied upon to score the ball more than I’ve ever had to do in my career. College coaches are able to see me lead and try to control the tempo of the game, which shows that I am a team guy willing to do whatever it takes to win. That’s one of the reasons we are currently 5-0 and in first place in our league."
Well, it turns out that some division one programs are well aware of what Benson has to offer. Currently, Austin Peay, Weber State, and East Tennessee State are all showing interest in the 5'9", 165-pound lead guard.
With his season heading into the new year, he has his sights set on big things in 2013.
"Honestly, my goal is to win a state championship and the Mr. Basketball Award in Class A," he informed me.
Future150 has helped Rashaan become more of a well known player on a national level, and his experience at the camp is something he really valued.
"My experience at the Future150 camp over this past year has helped me to become a more competitive player, which challenged me to get better as well as gave me the exposure I needed due to the fact that some of most elite talents from around of the country participate in both the regional and national camp."
When he returns to our camp next year, expect to see a fully diversified game from Rashaan, as well as a prospect with a slew of scholarship offers.
