PrimeTime Sports has been pumping out competitive tournaments all spring and this weekend indicates that tradition will continue deep into the summer.
A handful of 15u squads played up in the deepest (16u) division of the draw. Team Texas Houston brought a talented bunch. Pool play wrapped Saturday night setting the stage for an exciting Sunday of matchups.
Aziz Fadika, 2016 C ,Texas Inferno Black: Fadika is coming along slowly. He scores a little more now by use of his shoulder. The center likes to lower the shoulder and nudge his man off the spot. When he gets to the free throw line it can be a carnival. That and his mid-range game are the areas in need of much improvement. Fadika is a decent defensive rebounder.
Jakari Jackson, 2015 PG, Houston Kings: Like a QB holding his eyes on a decoy downfield Jackson throws the focus away from his primary target with a simple glance. He sees the floor very well. Jackson loves the short bounce pass, ala Chris Paul. Outside shooting is unproven. The point guard demonstrates really good body control and touch in traffic.
James Young, 2018 PF, Team Texas Houston: A springy combo forward, Young loves to exploit his athleticism. Saturday he was a top three player in his age group. A tip-dunk by Young thrilled dozens of onlookers. The thrilling putback exhibited extraordinary timing. He will be recruited for college, but he could be an impact college player if he learns to expand his shooting range to 15'.
Malcolm Epps, 2018 SF, Team Texas Houston: Epps is a great shot blocker. He knocks feeble layups all around the gym. Nobody dunks over Epps either. At 6'6" the forward will want to continue to develop his perimeter defense. The finish line is near though. Both power and mobility meet with this future star. On an unrelated note Epps has the personality media members dream about. Gregarious and engaging.
Jordan Oliver, 2018 SG, Team Texas Houston: Quickness is the trademark of Oliver. He likes to create contact in traffic. TTH was unstoppable Saturday, despite playing against some older competitors. No one on TTH shot from the perimeter, so Oliver still needs a more rounded evaluation of his outside shooting.
Parker Powell, 2017 SG, Katy HoopStars: Powell is a twin. Together they are a handful due to their feisty, bouncy nature. Powell is a good rebounder at both ends and he dives for loose balls. Powell has a decent handle, but probably projects off the ball.
Brandon Pinkerton, 2017 PF, Katy HoopStars: In a five minute stretch, Pinkerton collected three rebounds, two offensive. He also blocked a shot and provided an assist. Pinkerton is not a shooter, but he is important. He has powerful arms. The frontcourt of Katy HoopStars is physical because of Pinkerton's play.
Jevon Burton, 2018 SF, Franchize All-Stars: This Burton is the little brother of Joe Burton at Oklahoma St. and former Future150 Camp alum. If Jevon is anything like his brother look out. He showed signs of being just that with his ability to knock down the 3-point shot. He's athletic, long and a smart player who loves to compete. Definitely one of the better 2018 players we saw today. Tons of upside to his game.
Colin Just, 2016 SF, Magnolia Mustangs: From either forward position, the 6'5" Just is a true threat. He has a remarkable quiver full of deadly post moves. Just's drop step is next level goood. He will need to get a little stronger to compete against college's battering bigs.
Trey Williams, 2016 G, 365 Elite: Williams was one of the more consistent scorers we saw today. He scored 18 points and did it in a variety of ways. His biggest weapon might be his 3-point shot which he knocked down with regularity. Court vision is something he showed in the half court and which created easy opportunities for his teammates. Overall, Williams had a solid performance in pool play.
Akin Igbaroola, 2016 WG, Houston Takeover: Igbaroola is a big-bodied slasher who knows how to use his body to create space. His ability to finish through contact makes him a consistent scorer. He loves to start the break after a rebound and his unselfish play creates easy buckets for others. With rebounding at a premium, he does it well on both ends of the floor. The one thing that stood out in his second game of pool play was his competitive fire. Gotta love a tough hard-nosed player who wants to win.
Louis Lessing, 2016 PG, Woodland Running Rebels: Lessing is a soild PG who can flat out score the rock. His ball handling is on point and loves getting the ball ahead on the fastbreak. His best attribute today was his abiltiy to knock down the 3-point shot. If you sit on his shot, he will break you down off the dribble and create for his teammates. Winner.
Jack Williams, 2017 SF, CutTheNets: Williams is a Future150 Camp alum who was an All-Star last summer. He has grown a couple of inches and added some good solid muscle to his frame. Offensively, Williams has started the transition to wing where he will probably end up when its all said and done. The one thing he does better than his competitor is compete and play hard. He's a glue guy that makes his team better by just being on the floor. Solid performance today.
Nathan Bradley, 2016 PG, Texas Inferno Black: Smart and quick. Bradley can finish in the lane, but he loves to drive and then kick. With his quickness he would be more dangerous if got a little selfish on the drives. Passing out is good basketball, but Bradley can be guilty of passing up a high-percentage finger roll for a three-pointer.
