Southlake, TX (Future150) -- A week ago Southlake Carroll’s Lil'Jordan Humphrey was rushing to a 1,000 yard football season, while trying to lead his football team to the Texas state Championship. Eight days later, he is matched up on the hardwood versus super sophomore Jordon Meyers a 6’2 silky smooth shooting guard.
The game ended up being an epic, overtime battle. Both teams scrapped to be last man standing. And that’s exactly what North Crowley was able to do, 60-56.
From the opening tip, Jordon Meyers made a statement. He got the ball off the tip, took three power dribbles toward the basket and pulled up from 15-feet and buried a nice, mid range jumper to get North Crowley on the board early. Throughout the first quarter Meyers and North Crowley controlled the game, with their swarming defense forcing Southlake into numerous turnovers, creating easy buckets for North Crowley.
Darius Pace, a 5’10 shooting guard from North Crowley knocked down a deep buzzer beating three to end the 1st quarter giving North Crowley a 15-6 lead.
Jordon Meyers started the second quarter off by scoring seven straight points, he scored any way he wanted. Meyers was virtually unstoppable and ended his run with a three-pointer in the face of Lil'Jordan Humphrey making Southlake call a much needed time out. Crowley was up 22-10 before the timeout happened. Southlake went on a 6-0 run picking up momentum and playing with Dragon Pride.
Picking up his second foul in the game, Lil Jordan Humphrey had to sit for four minutes in the second. With Humphrey being in foul trouble it really hurt Southlake. They are also playing without Hunter Sumi (San Diego signed), who is out with a broken hand. It took a total team effort for Southlake to stay in the game.
Upon Humphrey's return with 2:40 left in the half and down 10, Southlake picked up the pressure defense turning North Crowley over multiple times allowing Lil'Jordan Humphrey to score four straight points cutting the North Crowley lead down to seven at intermission. North Crowley’s biggest lead of the game was 14.
North Crowley opened up the second half with an alley oop pass to Jordan Meyers.
However, Humphrey and his teammates weren’t going to lay down against North Crowley at home. On the shoulders of their trapping defense, Southlake went on an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter hitting threes. Jordon Meyers kept his composure throughout the Southlake run. Meyers got the ball on the right wing made a jab step, blew by his defender on the baseline, flying through the air and dunking on the helpside defender. It brought the entire gymnasium to their collective feet.
“That’s the way you stop an 8-0 run”, said North Crowley assistant coach, Ed King.
The fourth quarter brought some serious action featuring both Humphrey and Jordon Meyers. Both players clearly would not let their teams lose.
Southlake went on another 6-0 run spearheaded by Lil'Jordan Humphrey bringing the score to 47-41 North Crowley.
Humphrey had three blocked shots and five points in the 4th quarter. One of his blocks came at a pivotal point in the fourth quarter. Darius Pace had what seemed to be an easy layup to take control of the game, but out of nowhere Humphrey soared through the air blocking the layup off the backboard. Southlake quickly countered off the miss and scored in transition.
On the inbounds Lil'Jordan got a steal, the bucket, and drew a foul. The free throw was missed. Southlake collected and called a timeout. Eight seconds remained with Southlake down a single point. They instantly fouled Lil'Jordan, who split the pair. North Crowley got off a shot, but no dice. Overtime ensued.
