Springfield, MA (Future150) -- If one thing has become exceedingly clear this year, it is that the class of 2016 is as deep as it is loaded with talent. There is a surplus of talent from coast to coast at several positions, and this group has a chance to go down as one of the better classes in recent memory.
One player who has flown under the radar nationally a bit is Mater Dei (CA) PF M.J. Cage. The talented big man has an advanced post game for his age and is continually getting better. In addition, he has a great tutor in his father, former San Diego State and NBA player Michael Cage. The elder Cage left SDSU as the all-time leading rebounder and was second in scoring all-time before enjoying a 14 year career in the league.
MJ is a bit soft spoken, but his game has done the talking for him this winter. He was fantastic at the Hoophall Classic against Neumann-Goretti and then played admirably when he went up against Jahlil Okafor and Whitney Young a couple of weeks later. He had this to say about how he’s played this winter:
“I think I’ve played well. I need to be more aggressive on the offensive end but I think I do a good job of scoring in the post and playing defense.”
He went on to say that he is working on his ball handling and shooting ability.
On the recruiting front, Cage has drawn plenty of interest already. He claims offers from UCLA, USC, Arizona, Washington, Gonzaga, and Kentucky. Florida State and San Diego State have begun to show serious interest as well. With some of the blue bloods on him already, it will be interesting to see if he decides to follow in his father’s footsteps at SDSU or ultimately ends up elsewhere.
This spring, he will suit up with Dream Vision and 2015 twin towers Chase Jeter and Stephen Zimmerman, forming arguably one of the top frontcourts on the AAU circuit. Follow along with Future150 as we continue to track the talented sophomore over this next two and a half years.
