New York, NY (Future150) -- With over 20 scholarship offers, it is hard to impress 2015 Iona Prep (NY) shooting guard Matt Ryan these days. However, the last week has been somewhat of a surprise to him.
In the past few days, the 6-foot-6 shooter has received interest from some of the top programs in college basketball: Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina.
“It’s unbelievable,” Ryan told Future150.com. “I’ve been watching these teams compete at the highest level of college basketball for years and to have them active in my recruitment is really special.”
Duke first reached out about a month ago, as assistant Steve Wojciechowski has stayed in contact. He also visited Ryan at Iona Prep to begin the recruiting process.
On Saturday, Duke took the next step as the junior fielded a call from head man Mike Krzyzewski.
“Coach K said he is extremely interested in me and what I can do on the court. He said he has only heard great things about me and definitely wants to visit my school during the season to see me in person.”
Ryan also added new interest from Kentucky and North Carolina during the week. Together, the tradition sticks out to him:
“I think the fact that they are such storied programs and so widely known as dominant basketball schools is really attractive. And they produce pros consistently, so that is something recruits like as well.”
Despite no offers from any of the three aforementioned schools, Ryan’s interest is high in the schools, and he is also a priority for several other programs.
To date, the sharpshooter holds offers from Boston College, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Arizona State, Pittsburgh, Harvard, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Clemson, Davidson, Providence, Fordham, Boston University, Creighton, Princeton, Iowa State, Penn, George Mason, Yale, Holy Cross, Brown, and Columbia.
“I’m not really looking for anything specific right now. I just want to build relationships with all the coaches,” he explained.
With the crème of the crop schools like Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina coming on as of late, expect more high-major powers to continue to express interest in Matt Ryan. Elite shooters are hard to come by, and Ryan is one of them.
