Louisville, KY (Future150) -- After a fantastic college basketball career with the Louisville Cardinals, Ellis Myles has smoothly transitioned into AAU administrator.
He also coaches a wonderful bunch of players out of the Greater Louisville area. The team, the program is called the Louisville Magic.
The Louisville Magic 16u squad is loaded with tough, physical players like Tony Jackson. For the last three weeks he was a warrior for Coach Myles.
"Ever since you put a ball in his hands he has learned that he is going to have some good days and he is going to have some bad days," said Jackson's mother. "He is tired when he comes home, but he knows he accomplished something."
In fact, Jackson picked up an Eastern Kentucky University offer just last week. Northern Kentucky University offered Saturday and Illinois State followed through days later.
Jackson stands 6-foot-4, but really played power forward this summer.
Joining Jackson in the frontcourt was Jaylen Sebree. After a wonderful AAU Nationals Showcase, Sebree picked up a life-changing offer.
The Big Offer
Tom Crean, the head coach of the Indiana, watched the Louisville Magic 16u battle a great All-Ohio Red squad Sunday afternoon.
Monday afternoon Coach Crean extended an offer to Jaylen Sebree.
Entering the weekend Sebree was deemed an explosive, yet somewhat raw wing. He only had Samford and VCU offers. That all changes with this big offer.
Indiana offering means Sebree can play Big Ten basketball. Every other Big 10 program, and most Midwestern-based mid-majors now have to consider they were wrong about Sebree. Perhaps they didn't realize how good he can be.
His recruitment leaps forward two stages with this offer.
Guard Play
Sunday David Sloan (2017) and JR Mathis (2017) played together in a stunningly dynamic backcourt for Louisville Magic 16u. Despite the All-Ohio Red depth and length they had real trouble containing these two playmakers.
"Jason Gardner said that Anthony or JR reminded him so much of himself that he just has to have him," said his father Anthony Mathis. "Because of his leadership and the past two weeks he has shot 67% from the field and has shot 62% from the three-point. His pick'n'roll has been unbelievable. A couple of the scouts said kids his age don't understand the pocket pass like he does."
The July has been wonderful for Mathis. He routinely left his imprint on games. He has always been a great passer, but his outside shooting is clicking at the right time for evaluations.
"He has started to get interest from Northwestern," said Mr. Mathis. "Got an offer from IUPUI. Got another offer from Samford. Cornell is very interested in him."
Like Gardner did for Arizona in the late 90's, Mathis could do for IUPUI or whichever school he eventually chooses.
"Samford offered him and said they love his leadership ability on the floor," said Mr. Mathis. "He tells everybody where to go. They see him talking to the refs and smiling. There is a dialogue between him and the referees. They thought that showed his personality and his leadership."
15u
The 15u team consistently played the best defense of any team in the Midwest for the last ten days.
Undersized forwards like Rashawn McCauley, Dante Smalls, Delonta Wimberly, and Dorion Tisby were roadblocks in the paint. Emerging star Steven Fitzgerald played his part too, dropping down to help out at power forward.
The real strength of this team was Eric Boone, Danny Butt, and Willie Hill.
Together these guards deflected passes and penetrations. Active hands from Boone and double teams from Fitzgerald. Scoring was always difficult for opponents. Even exceptional squads like Mac Irvin FIRE went through lengthy dry patches against the 15u Magic men.
"Steven and Danny have been starting all year," said 15u Coach DJ Moberly. "They have been real solid for the Magic program. Steven can be one of the best candidates for 2018."
Fitzgerald has improved faster than his peers in recent weeks. From a good spot-up shooter to a dangerous slasher/rebounder the young man is adding new layers every week.
"I think he can be a 2/3," said Coach Moberly. "He shoots the ball so well. He has the body to bang with the three's."
Because the 15u Magic team lacks size, Fitzgerald played a lot in the paint defensively. He consistently helped on the glass, but when he floated to the arc at the other end, he found his future home.
Fitzgerald is really difficult to defend because he is now a legit slasher. He gets around all forwards with ease. Guards shorter than he are having trouble containing his dribble.
Butt is a different kind of wing. Built like a linebacker, Danny uses his strong body to ward off defenders. They are easily confused for a thunder and lightning tandem.
Just because Butt is a strong player does not mean he is one-dimensional. Butt can shoot really well and always seems to understand the situation. When his team needs a bucket he shoots. If the Magic are struggling to stop the opposing guards he invests on the defensive end.
The 6-foot-2 off guard really adds so much to the game. Another impactful addition to the Magic squad was Willie Hill.
Hill gave the team uncommon athleticism and length. While he is clearly destined for big things he did drift a bit at the end of NY2LA Summer Jam.
Hill's best games were earlier during the second LIVE period. He can lead the team in rebounds, assists, or points and the versatility and quickness of Hill are hard to match.
Along with Hill, Eric Boone makes it all go.
"He is our floor general," said Coach Moberly. "He really gets us going. He gets Steven and Danny open, knows how to break down the defense."
Great coaching and incredible defensive investment joined to make the Louisville Magic 15u team an impossible opponent.
The first two weeks they advanced to the Final Four. It took a dominating Mac Irvin FIRE 15u team to oust the Magic from Summer Jam up in Milwaukee.
In fact, the Magic overcame a 15-point deficit, only to fall in overtime.
It took a 16u team to end their season, but the Magic 15u squad has the makings of a adidas Gauntlet team in 2016.
In addition Coach Myles will be retooling with the younger talents. Building an AAU program can be tough. Keeping great players together in the ferocious sea of piranhas that is Kentucky basketball appears impossible.
Somehow Coach Myles has done it, year after year. The program is only climbing.
