KETTERING, OH (Future150) -- The faithful that made it to the early game on Monday at Flyin’ to the Hoop were rewarded in a special way, as Walnut Hills guard MaCio Teague went for 51 points, eight rebounds, and four assists as his team dominated Piqua. Teague’s mark of 51 is second-most in event history, and eclipsed the mark set by Franklin’s Luke Kennard just two nights earlier, which stood at 47.
“It’s a very prestigious event and it’s just a great feeling to have knowing that I put work all the time in the gym,” Teague told Future150 after the record-setting mark. “I feel like I have one of the best work ethics in the country, and it’s paid off today.”
One of the most impressive things about his 51 points was that the unsigned senior shot an impressive 21-of-31 from the field, and only attempted three free throws the whole contest.
“I was just focusing in on all of my shots, I saw them falling in,” Teague said. “I was just focused getting the team involved, it was just a mental thing, really.”
Teague’s exclamation point on Monday came midway through the fourth quarter, when he got a steal and went coast-to-coast, absorbed the contact and finished for an and-one that had the Walnut Hills faithful buzzing.
“I knew I had 48 then, and Coach Ricardo (Hill) was debating whether or not he should sub me out of the game,” Teague said. “When I got the steal I was thinking ‘this is your chance’, because I had one minute to score. So I knew I had to put that in the basket, and I’m glad that I made it.”
Recruitment
As for recruiting, the list is at five, but spans to multiple places across the country.
“I still have the same schools: Seton Hall, Akron, Yale, Air Force Academy, Winthrop,” Teague told Future150.
With more big tests coming up, the chances for greater exposure will continue to come, but for now the senior is focused on being even more efficient than he was on Monday.
“I would say more of being efficient, that was one of my goals for the full season,” Teague said. “Last year I shot 46.9 percent, this year I’m up to about 53 (percent), so I’m just trying to be more efficient from the field.”
