Point Pleasant Beach, NJ (Future150) -- With Eric Atkins graduating after this season, Demetrius Jackson was set to be the only point guard on Notre Dame’s roster next season. Mike Brey has been looking to add one more to next year’s squad, and after offering Point Pleasant Beach (NJ) star Matt Farrell last week, he landed the guard he was looking for.
It didn’t take long for the former Boston College commit to pick the Irish after they offered, as he chose to end the process for a second time, tonight.
So what will the Irish be getting? In short a guard who can play either position, shoot the ball well, and make his teammates around him better. Playing with the Raritan Roundballers on the AAU circuit kept Farrell flying under-the-radar outside of the Northeast. After de-committing from Boston College and producing a monster high school season, things had really picked up for the senior.
“I just feel like I’m going to make an impact at the next level, I can run the point or play off the ball a bit. I feel like I shoot it well enough that defenses have to respect me,” he told Future150 a couple of weeks ago at the 2014 Primetime Shootout.
Schools such as Rutgers, Providence, Creighton, St. Joe’s, and Butler were all heavily involved and appeared to be in good shape with the New Jersey native, until Notre Dame got involved. In a class that appears to be thin at the point guard spot, a majority of those programs will still be looking to add a lead guard now that Farrell is part of the Irish.
He joins forwards Martin Geben and Bonzie Colson as part of the 2014 class for Mike Brey and company. Once he sets foot on campus he should see immediate minutes behind Jackson. Look for him to be a leader of sorts right off the bat, as well as make everyone on the floor around him better.
