Jersey City, NJ (Future150) -- New Jersey power St. Anthony's has played host to The Skyline Classic over a number of years, and while it took a hiatus recently, the event returned for the second straight year last week. One of the teams in the field was Kentucky based Covington Catholic.
The Northern Kentucky program has ties to St. Anthony's thanks to their head coach being a former assistant of legendary coach Bob Hurley. Thus, the decision to make the trip up to Jersey City was a natural one.
The Colonels were without one of their top players in 2018 wing C.J. Fredrick, but played hard on their three day stay. That being said, Colonels big man Jake Walter was able to be featured a bit more with Fredrick's absence.
At 7-foot-1, 250 pounds, Walter is a bit of a throwback big man in the sense that he's almost exclusively a low post scorer and rebounder. While he didn't block a ton of shots, Walter is someone who will clog the lane and alter shots.
"I feel like rebounding is the most dominant part of my game. I know I need to be more aggressive offensively and look to score more, not just pass the ball," he said.
His size and ability to get up and down the floor are both very intriguing, and college coaches agree. Ball State was the first school to offer Walter, while Boston University, Kent State, Belmont and Utah State have all been actively recruiting him.
With a 3.6 GPA, academics are going to be a factor for the big man. Watch out for Walter on the AAU circuit this spring and summer with Indiana Elite, where he will surely pick up more offers.
