Chicago, IL (Future150) -- In an age of instant gratification patience is rarely practiced. Two years of development have vaulted Nebraska signee Glynn Watson blossom into a high major guard.
From a little-known undersized Chicagoland talent to top ten PG in the nation, Watson's ascendance belongs in the great skyrocketing recruitment stories. Ultimately five Big 10 programs offered him a full ride. Early November Watson signed with the ascendant Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Stories like Glynn's are too common to be an accident. He trains with the Illinois Wolves AAU program.
Instant Greatness
Created by Michael Mullins in 1999 with one grade school squad, the Wolves have grown into one of the best AAU programs in the Midwest. Alumni include Evan Turner (Boston Celtics), Keita Bates-Diop (Ohio State), Chasson Randle (Stanford), and Frank Kaminsky (Wisconsin).
Next Gen
Coach Mullins can comfortably move his emotional investment to the Class of 2016. There are some gems in that pouch too.
It begins with Future150 #97 Barret Benson of Hinsdale South High School. The son of a Purdue basketball player, Benson already has Purdue, Iowa State, Northwestern, Penn State, Kansas State, DePaul, Indiana, Oregon State, and Purdue offers. Converging schools like Georgetown, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame represent realistic options down the line. Any of these four could eventually offer the versatile big man.
A powerful guard, Skylar Nash, is getting elevated interest from Wisconsin, Marquette, Purdue, and DePaul. Bruce Weber and the Wildcats of Manhattan, Kansas have offered. Playing for Whitney Young High School will afford him more exposure than anyone. Nash has visited Michigan and Wisconsin this year.
Wing Nate Kennell picked up an offer from Northern Illinois University.
"When asked to tryout for the Illinois Wolves my husband and I were a bit skeptical of Nate trying out because we have participated in other programs for our other boys," said Joy Kennell. "We drive two hours each way to go to practice and back home. However, Nate asked us to let him just try out and see if he even makes the team. As his parents, we agreed."
Kennell did make the team and continues to develop each year. He dropped 28.5 ppg to earn at MVP Dean Riley Shootin' the Rock Thanksgiving Tournament.
"Illinois Wolves is a very structured and organized program," said Mrs. Kennell. "When we get home late on Sunday from a tournament they expect the boys to be in school the next day because playing basketball is a privilege in college and to succeed as an athlete they need to have good school habits."
Hundreds of AAU programs do not even know what classes their players are taking, let alone demand they attend. When a young man has role models who care about school, then education is not the forgotten twin in the student-athlete moniker.
Kennell has ongoing interest from UNI, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Western Illinois, Yale, South Dakota State, SLU, and Furman.
Look to the Class of 2017 for a pair of emerging guards in Jamal Nixon and Keondre Schumacher. Speedster Schumacher flies up the floor like former UCLA lead guard Darren Collison. Like Collison, Schumacher has track genetics. Keondre's father, Chris Schumacher coaches track for Illinois Wesleyan University in Normal, Illinois. The elder Schumacher is a second cousin of Colin Kaepernick, though they were both adopted before one years old. Mr. Schumacher was an three time All-American for UW-LaCrosse. He also played football for a powerhouse college team.
Keondre focuses on the hardwood.
"He can't get up enough shots in terms of his own work ethic," said Schumacher. "He will get up at six in the morning and get up 500 shots before the day starts. He is kind of a gym rat. I don't ask him to do it. He says, 'Dad, I am going to get some shots up in the morning.'"
Standing 5'10" Schumacher will need to lean on his speed, quickness, and intelligence in a giant's game. The shoulders will have to endure a young team's burdens. For Normal University High, Schumacher is one of just three varsity returnees.
"Keita (Bates-Diop) was on varsity last year," said Schumacher. "He was the center. There were nine seniors on the team last year. Three of them were three-year starters, seven seniors in the rotation."
Growing pains are to be expected. Still the Illinois point guard routinely demonstrates the innate ability to outrun defenders. Former Illinois State Head Coach Tim Jankovich sees Schumacher advancing up the ladder.
"He has given Keondre some very good praise," said Schumacher. "He likes what he sees in him right now. He just wants him to stay the course and keep working."
Coaches are often intrigued by this coach's son.
"I think he is a terrific athlete," said Coach Mullins. "He has a lot of quickness, and speed, and endurance. I am sure those are all things from having his father working with him in his adolescence and through middle school. He has great acceleration, endurance, and lateral quickness, which are all really important things as you are developing, particularly at the guard spot in basketball."
Potentially the greatest talent in the entire program is 6'5" shooting guard Nixon. The sophomore already starts for Oak Park Fenwick High School.
Coach Mullins sees him playing some for the 17U basketball team this spring. According to Nixon's father the process of recruiting has only just begun.
"Michigan, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Northwestern all have expressed some interest in him," said William Nixon. "Nothing formal. He has received mail from Stanford, Xavier, Nebraska, Bowling Green, and Virginia."
Only a handful of guards nationally can withstand the strength of Nixon as he drives to the tin. For Fenwick, Nixon opened the campaign with 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and three assists. They are planting the wing under the basket, which will help him round out his game. Still Nixon's future will be on the perimeter. He can grow into a wonderful scorer, rebounder, and defender from the 2/3.
Elementary Development by Watson
Nebraska will suit up Watson next fall. Few outside Illinois realize Glynn is the younger brother of Demetri McCamey (Illinois graduate) and DeAndre McCamey (Southern Indiana).
"I have coached all of his brothers," said Coach Mullins. "They were point guards for me. He was smaller physically than they were. He already had really good speed and quickness and ball-handling ability."
Watson snuck up on a few Big 10 programs. They undervalued him because he is an inch or two shorter than their dream PG. Still Watson worked. He trained. He struggled.
"He was tremendous at the end of half and end of game situations," said Coach Mullins. "He hit multiple late game shots. That is a talent that is invaluable when you play with a shot clock in college."
Coach Mullins raved about Watson's ability to create shots in the final minute.
"He is great in big moments," said Coach Mullins. "A lot of guys are great in the middle of the game. Few are great when it matters. We were very confident in putting the ball in Glynn's hands."
As Watson excels in college the Illinois Wolves brand will garner more respect. Yet another success story reflects favorably on the founder, Mike Mullins.
The Illinois Wolves AAU program continues to make players better by allowing them to consistently grow into complete basketball players.
