Huntsville, AL (Future150) -- Huntsville High School was the place to be in North Alabama during the few days after Christmas, as tons of college coaches and high school basketball fans attended the 30th annual Huntsville Times Classic.
The annual classic is known for bringing together some of Huntsville’s premiere teams and players, and like the past, this year did not disappoint. Trevor Lacey, Justin Pride, Levi Randolph, and others are former noteworthy participants, and some of the players below have an opportunity to be the next great players out of Huntsville, Ala.
Ethan Stair; 2015 SG – Hazel Green: Stair is quickly becoming one of the better young players in the city, and when everything is said and done, he could be the best in 2015. Already having a nice, college-ready body at 6-foot-4, the sophomore showed a very all-around game; he showed the ability to shoot the ball from 3, as well as putting the ball on the floor and finishing at the basket. He also has a high-motor that was apparent throughout the event. Several high-major schools are beginning to take notice of his talent, and he could land his first offer soon.
Austin Dempsey; 2013 SG – Hazel Green: Dempsey may be the ultimate x-factor for Hazel Green heading into the end of the season. A senior, Dempsey showed his experience and poise, as he knocked down big shots for his team in tough situations. His soft shooting stroke is by far the best quality right now, but Dempsey also displayed the ability to control the team. It looks like he could roll over into a decent combo guard at the next level.
Seab Webster; 2013 SF – Madison County: I have said it before and I will continue to say it for years to come: Alabama-Huntsville got an absolute steal in Seab Webster. There is no doubt Webster is at least a mid-major prospect, yet the UAH staff convinced him to stay home and be a part one of the top Division-II programs in the country. Webster has a great combination of skill and strength, both of which he uses to his advantage on the floor. While he may force shots at times, the 6-foot-6 wing is very crafty with his game. He led a great comeback upset against Hazel Green, where he poured in 27 points to push Madison County over the top. Good luck containing this kid in the future.
Joshua Langford; 2016 CG – Madison Academy: Despite being just a freshman, Langford is the best college prospect the state of Alabama has to offer right now. With offers from Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, and Tennessee, many residents came out to see the youngster in action. Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin also took a day to see the young stud, and he was not disappointed. Langford can score on all three levels and he is quickly becoming a quick guard. At 6-foot-5, he rebounds very well in traffic, and he also uses his strength and size to avoid defenders when attacking the basket. However, the most under-rated aspect of Langford’s game right now is his passing ability. He sees the floor extremely well at such a young age.
Kerryon Johnson; 2015 PG – Madison Academy: Johnson may end up being one of the top running back prospects in 2015 for football, but the kid can play basketball, too. Along with Langford, Johnson helped push the Mustangs to the third place game of the tournament. Kerryon, the brother of Belmont guard Kerron Johnson, spent the tournament attacking the basket and finishing in transition. He also acted as a tough defender for Madison Academy, forcing several steals and getting easy lay-ups on the other end. His speed easily makes him a high-major athlete.
Lamonte Turner; 2015 PG – Sparkman: Turner did not disappoint Future150, as he displayed a very nice overall game for the Senators over the three-day tournament. With a senior-heavy team, Turner affected the game as a sophomore in many ways. He and teammate Rakiya Battle controlled the tempo, but Turner also faired very well in attacking the basket. However, his best showing was his mid-range shot. Very comparable to former Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight, Turner shot very well from 15-feet, as well as from 3. He looks to be a very promising shooting point guard.
William Crowell; 2013 SF – Sparkman: Crowell burst onto the scene in the first game of the tournament for Sparkman with his pure athleticism. He may not be the best basketball player in Huntsville, but his jumping and athletic ability are second-to-none. He constantly plays above the rim, where he threw down several dunks, alley-oops, and tip-in dunks. Crowell also shot the ball well from behind the arch. After this year’s classic, Crowell may have enhanced his stock the most, as several Division-II and JUCO coaches were raving about his game.
Gerron Scissum; 2015 SF – Lee-Huntsville: The most intriguing prospect from this year’s event is undoubtedly Gerron Scissum. At 6-foot-6, the sophomore helped the Lee Generals win yet another Huntsville Times Classic, and he affected the game in many different ways. Scissum utilized his length to dominate the boards on both ends of the floor, as well as affecting other players’ shots on defense. He still has a long way to go because of his pure raw skill at this point, but there is no doubt he is a high-major talent. His ball-handling is decent right now, but to be a SF, he will have to continue to improve his dribbling, as well as extending his shooting range.
Khwan Fore; 2014 PG – Lee-Huntsville: Fore is the biggest transfer pickup this season for the city, and had it not been for him, Lee probably wouldn’t have brought home the championship. With Scissum controlling the inside, Fore pushed the tempo and made plays in transition. He added several assist per game to go along with 10 points, but he quietly added a high number of rebounds each game. Fore is definitely a prospect to keep an eye on over the next year or so.
Justin Ward; 2013 SF – Buckhorn: Ward is another top senior from Huntsville, and he will continue his career at the next level. The 6-foot-5 athlete is an extremely physical specimen, as he plays above the rim and has a high-motor. Right now, he excels at rebounding and defense. He shows a nice shot from outside, but he will have to be more consistent to be a true threat at the next level. When he’s hot, Ward is the best prospect on the floor, no matter who he is matched up with.
Devorice Milbry; 2014 SF – Grissom: Grissom’s offense doesn’t necessarily show any high-octane offensive power or high-scoring games, but Milbry found a way to show his talent. The 6-foot-5 wing is used as a post player for his high school squad, but he scored at all three levels. Milbry had a nice floater going throughout the event, and the rest of his game followed. He also showed a good mid-range shot, as well as hitting a couple of three-point baskets.
Robert Steele; 2014 PF – Butler: With outstanding guard Trevor Lacey and Justin Pride now gone from Butler, a new star has emerged for Jack Doss’ squad. Robert Steele, a 6-foot-6 power forward, not holds the reins for Butler. While he may be a little under-sized, he battled down low with opposing teams’ big men. A lefty, Steele also shot the ball nicely from mid-range; he also found ways to get to the free-throw line. Steele is a double-double machine, and he should find a landing spot at the next level.
Dalton Barkley; 2015 SF – Bob Jones: Like Butler, Bob Jones isn’t necessarily the basketball powerhouse anymore. However, with time, things could be bright for the Patriots. They will be lead by sophomore Dalton Barkley in the future, who is already playing like a senior at this point in his career. Barkley played very well under pressure when going against traps and double-teams, virtually helping keep his team in play for most of games. He also can shoot the ball well from different places on the floor. He looks to be a solid Division-II prospect right now, but if he adds some strength and weight and gets quicker, he could make a jump to a low-major school.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
As noted, Gerron Scissum is a high-major prospect. However, he is not known. As of right now, the only school that has expressed serious interest in the sophomore is West Virginia. Expect that to change with time, though.
Justin Ward currently holds three offers: Boston University, Jacksonville, and Mercer; Lipscomb, Clemson, Texas A&M, Auburn, and others are also interested. He is looking to gain more interest and he will begin taking visits after the holidays.
Ethan Stair has several schools tracking him right now, including Belmont, UAB, Alabama, LSU, Murray State, Tennessee, Georgia State, Jacksonville, and Winthrop. He visit UAB a few weeks ago and was in attendance for Alabama’s game vs. Tulane on Sunday.
Georgia had an assistant in attendance on Day One, and he was presumably there to checkout 2014 SF Lewis Sullivan. Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, UAB, and Radford are some other schools interested in the junior. He is the brother of Auburn guard Frankie Sullivan.
Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin checked out Joshua Langford during the first day; the Volunteers have offered and they continue to show Langford’s camp they are very interested in him, despite his age. Georgia also saw him play.
Lamonte Turner took in Alabama’s game against Tulane over the weekend as well. The Tide is interested, along with several other high major schools, including Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Auburn. He currently holds offers from Jacksonville, Mercer, and Kennesaw State.
