PICKERINGTON, OH (Future150) -- Watching a once 15-point lead dwindle to just four, Hilliard Bradley (OH) had seen this movie before, but this time they were out to change the ending.
Jackson Murphy had 18 points and 10 rebounds as his Hilliard Bradley team survived a rally from a tough Pickerington North team, defeating them 58-47 Tuesday night at the We Are Pickerington tournament. Senior Bryce Montes led the Panthers in the loss with 16 points and nine rebounds.
There was no guarantee after the first quarter that either team would reach the 40s let alone 58 or 47, as the two teams struggled offensively with Pickerington North taking a slight 7-6 advantage.
2016 guard Brandon Glenn had all six points for the Jaguars in the first quarter, and added to his stat line quickly in the second quarter, hitting another three and dishing out an assist as Bradley opened the frame with a 10-0 run. Ball movement was the key in the first half for Hilliard Bradley, as eight of their nine made shots over the first two quarters were assisted upon, and Glenn had four of those assists.
Glenn and the Jaguars controlled a majority of the second quarter, but a buzzer-beating three by Bryce Montes knocked the Bradley lead down to just six at 24-18. Montes would open the following half with a bucket, and Pickerington North was right back in the game, down just four.
The passing and offensive efficiency by Bradley started to show itself again in crunch time, and Murphy was a key player in their success. The senior had 16 of his game-high 18 points after the half, mostly on layups and short jump-shots. His easy buckets were due to the guard play of Glenn, who threw seven assists in the game.
Pickerington North was able to turn the tide towards the end of the third quarter, using a full-court press to slow down the Jaguars. The major boost to the rally came thanks to junior guard Zach Montes, as he helped the Panthers score the final five points of the frame in the last five seconds to end the quarter down just eight after being down as many as 14.
All of that momentum would cut the lead to six, but the play of freshmen Isaiah Speelman and Braden Norris would help close out the game, scoring 11 of Bradley's 17 fourth quarter points.
