Birmingham, AL (Future150) -- The Future150 Camp series started the 2016 schedule off in Birmingham, AL last weekend. In the Spring time Future150 looks to evaluate young talent hoping to get some of the top unknown talent in the gym.
The Birmingham Underclassmen Camp kicked things off featuring players from eight different states, and a plethora of talent from all positions on the floor.
2019 SG Anthony Watkins, Fort Oglethorpe (GA): Watkins is a familiar face when watching him play. His game has progressed at a fast rate and his scoring ability is what's sticking out at his point. He was making shots all over the floor this past weekend. Mid-range, transition, 3-point range you name it, he did it. His athleticism has increased as well which allowed him to finish at the rim band rebound better. As he works on his speed and quickness more, look for his game to take the next step. Overall, big weekend for Watkins his past weekend. Can't wait to see him again.
2019 PG Stephon Jackson, Jackson (MS): Jackson is an intreguing prospect at the guard position due to that fact that he can play both guard postions extremely well. He showed good ball handling skills and the ability to create plays. His ability to break you down off the dribble and get into the lane made it almost impossible to stop. During the All-Star game he made back to back 3-point shots to keep his team close. His ability to score makes him someone to keep our eyes especially if he continues to grow. "Swag" would be a good word that describes his court presence.
2020 PG JaMichael Thompson, Birmingham (AL): Thompson is a pass first point guard who knows how to get everyone involved. He has a good change of pace to his game and loves to break you down off the dribble. He's not going to do anything flashy but is extremely effective when running the show. He just seems to make all the right passes. If you leave him open he will make you pay with the mid-range jumper. As his jumper improves along with his overall skill development, look for him to take the next step in his game.
2020 PG Elijah Tate, Baton Rogue (LA): Tate is a high volume scorer who can fill it up at times but also must work on shot selection. He has a great first step off the bounce and loves scoring in transition. If you leave him open he can make you pay from long range. His quickness makes him a good on ball defender and gives him the ability to create for his teammates. Competitor might be the best word to describe his overall game at this point in his development. As he continues to get stronger and more athletic look for his game to take the next step. Strong showing this past weekend.
2019 SG Andrew Robison, Houma, (LA): Robison is no stranger to the camp. Everytime we see him he gets better and better. Since we last saw him he's has grown a couple of inches, gotten stronger and added some quickness to his game. His shot is one of the more fundamental shots we've see at this age. His ball handling is getting better which will allow him to play both guard positions. Attack mode was his mind set all weekend as he shook his defenders and attacked the rim while scoring with either hand. The most impressive part of his game is his ability to knock down the 3-ball with constistency. He had his peers in awe as he scored at will. Robison is starting to make a name for himself.
2020 SG Austin Harvell, Athens, (AL): Harvell is a player who has all the intangibles of the prototypical basketball player. He has good size, length, and athleticism. He's fundamental and has the ability to play multiple positions on the floor. The one thing he did all weekend long was make shots. He was scoring on all 3-levels and knocking down the 3-ball with consistency. As he gets stronger and becomes more aggressive look out. His performance landed him in the the All-Star game and it was easy to see why.
2020 PG Paulie Stramaglia, Mountain Brook (AL): Stramaglia was one of the top players in the camp. He continues to improve every time we see him. Playing JV basketball at a 7A school this past year has helped his game progress tremendously. He has elite court vision and his ball handling allows him to break down defenders and create for his teammates. The one thing he has added to his game is a consistent 3-point shot. You can tell he's been putting in the hours and tweaking it some to make it more fundamental. Solid over all performance this past weekend but at this point it's expected.
2020 CF Antwan Burnette, Montgomery (AL): Burnette was voted the MVP of the camp this past weekend. The versitale combo forward did it all and made it look easy while doing it. The one thing that stood out the most was his ability to make out side jump shots. Most of his scoring came from offensive rebounding where he used his athleticism to finish at the rim or from the long ball. At 6-foot-4 inches and as highly skilled as he is, the sky is the limit for this young prospect. Look for him to make a jump into the national rankings next update.
2019 CG Andrew Robison, Houma (LA): Robison is no stranger to the camp. Everytime we see him he gets better and better. Since we last saw him he has grown a couple of inches, became stronger and added some quickness to his game. His shot is one of the more fundamental shots we've see at this age. His ball handling is getting better which will allow him to play both guard positions. Attack mode was his mind set all weekend as he shook his defenders and attacked the rim while scoring with either hand. The most impressive part of his game was his ability to knock down the 3-ball with constistency. He had his peers in awe as he scored at will. Robison is starting to make a name for himself.
2019 PF Christopher Brown, Pelham (AL): Brown is a long wiry prospect who showed good athleticism around the rim. He loves scoring in transition and was one of the better finishers when attacking. His bread and butter shot was the 15-foot jumper along the baseline. Rebounding on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor where one of his strenghts. As his skill level and aggression continues to progress so will his game, and that a scary thing for this prospect. Staying in the gym and working on his game will only make him better.
2019 SF Jaylen Forbes, Florence (MS): Forbes is a nice looking prospect who has a nice frame, long arms and showed good athleticism. When you think of a scorer his picture should show up. He scored at all three levels all weekend long. The one part of his game that stood out the most was his ability to score at the rim off the dribble. If you leave him open he can knock down the 3-ball as well. He's a nice on ball defender and can guard multiple positions on the floor. As he gets stronger and works on his ball handling, I can see him make the move from a 3-4 to a 2-3. Sky's the limit for him if he continues to work on his game.
2019 CG Latrell Simpson, Marion (IN): Simpson is a fundamentally sound player who showed a good feel for the game. He was one of the better point guard prospects in the camp. He proved that if he grows more he could play both guard positions on the floor due to his ability to score. He scored on all three levels and we quite effecient from the 3-point line. From the PG position he was one of the better finishers at the rim when attacking. Size and strength are two things this prospect needs to go along with his high skill level.
2020 SG Caleb McGill, Taylorsville (MS): McGill has good size and a nice frame for an 8th grader. At 6-foot-1 inches, his ability to play 3 positions on the floor makes him a solid prospect. He got off to a hot start on Saturday shooting the ball from the 3-point line. His overall play on both ends of the floor defensively and offensively carried him on Sunday as the shots were hard to come by. Skill development will help him reach the next step in his game. A solid overall performance this past weekend is what landed him in the All-Star game.
2019 SF Jaylon Johnson, Jackson (MS): Johnson showed a well rounded game with the ability to play multiple positions on the floor. As Saturday 5 on 5 began, he torched defenses with his 3-point shot and attacked the basket of the dribble. He single handily carried his team to victory 2 times against a better group of players he faced. His competitive nature is one trait you could see he had in him. As he becomes more athletic, works on his foot speed and maybe grows 2-3 more inches, look out. His overall performance landed him in the All-Star game where he had another strong performance. Solid weekend for this Mississippi native.
2019 CG Alexander Robertson, Coaling (AL): Robertson was one of more fun prospects to watch at the camp this past weekend. At 5-foot-nine inches tall, he was easily one of the most athletic players in the camp. His tenacious play on both ends of the floor was unmatched by any player. Rebounding on both ends of the floor was his bread and butter scoring move. He loves to score in transition and his ability to get steals on the defensive end is what made him stand out. Attacher might be the best word to describe his overall game. A solid over all performance landed him in the All-Star game.
2021 PG Travis Dockery, Memphis (TN): Dockery is a fundamental point guard who seems to make all the right passes. He has a good first step and can break his defender down off the dribble. If you leave him open he proved he can knock down the open jumper from anywhere on the floor. For a guard his size he was extremely effective on the offensive end. His aggression must improve defensively and if he hits a growth spurt soon it would go a long way with his development. He was one of the better small guards in the camp.
2020 C Ksuan Casey, Madisonville (KY): Casey was one of the more intriguing prospects at camp. At 6-foot-6 inches and a big body, he was able to impose his will on most of his defenders. He showed a nice post up game where he did most of his scoring on the weekend. He made a living on both the defensive and offensive glass. He must continue to work on his footwork and post moves to be effective as his game continues to develop. Overall body composition must improve and working on his athleticism will be his friend the next year and a half. Solid perfromance from the big man this past weekend.
2019 SF Jalen Bustamante, Alabaster (AL): Bustamante has good size and a nice frame. The one thing you can't teach is athleticism, and he has a ton of that. His ability to score on the fast break and finish at the rim might be his best overall trait at this point in his game. He is a strong rebounder on the defensive end and can knock down the occasional 3-point shot if he's left open. Skill development will be his friend as he contiues to grow and get better.
2020 SF Kenny White, Madisonville (KY): White has long arms and is a smooth lefty who can score the rock. At 6-foot-2 inches, he can play mutliple positions on the floor which makes him very versitale. He can score on all three levels and loves shooting the 3-ball in the half court. He made his living off of offensive rebounds and put backs all weekend long. He must become quicker and more athletic in order to be successful as he gets older. As he gets stronger and continues his skill developement the sky is the limit for this prospect. Solid overall performance this past weekend.
2020 PG Javonte Platt, Smyrna (TN): Platt is a PG who loves breaking down defenders off the dribble and creating for his teammates. He is a good on ball defender and has a good first step off the dribble when attacking the rim. Defense is definitely something he takes pride in when he's on the floor. He loves to compete and it became infectious to his teammates. He can score on all 3-levels, and if you leave him open he can make you pay with the long ball. Winner would be the best word to describe his overall demeanor when you see him play. Great overall weekend from this small guard.
2019 SF Dayon Bryant, Pinson (AL): Bryan is a strong SG who loves to score in transition. He has a nice frame and is a decent athlete. His defense is what sets him apart from most of his fellow campers. If you leave him open he showed the ability to make shots from both the mid range as well as the 3-ball. As he becomes more aggressive on both ends of the floor look for his game to take the next step in his development. The one thing that stood out the most was his willingness to listen to coaching and apply it on the court.
2020 PG Larry Holmes, Madison (MS): Holmes is a speedy point guard prospect who can get anywhere on the floor he wants with the dribble. He loves to score in the open floor where he has the advantage. Since we last saw him, he's added a mid range jumper to his game which now makes him almost impossible to stop. His quickness allows him to be a really good on ball defender as well. At 5-foot-9 inches, he's a good athlete and rebounds the ball well from the point guard position. Electric would be the best word to describe his game at this point. As his skill development continues look for his game to take the next step.
2021 PG Cameren Hunter, Alexander (AR): The Arkansas native showed up with something to prove this past weekend and had a nice showing. The smooth lefty proved he can play both guard positions. His ability to score and run his team is what stood out the most. His quickness made him one of the better on ball defenders and allowed him to create off the dribble. As he gets stronger and works a little more on his shot, look for this crafty PG to only get better. His game kind of reminds me of Isaiah Thomas of the Boston Celtics. Soild weekend.
