Charlottesville, VA (Future150) -- Even after his commitment to Auburn last October, Davion Mitchell has continued to rise in national rankings and after a strong spring with the EYBL’s Georgia Stars, has to be mentioned in any conversation regarding the nation’s elite point guard prospects.
Though his squad failed to qualify for Peach Jam, Mitchell had an outstanding spring from an individual perspective, averaging 15.1 points and 3.6 assists on the Nike circuit while shooting over 50% from the field.
He credits his rise to a change in his mindset that he made prior to his high school season at Liberty County High School in his hometown of Hinesville, Georgia.
“In high school season, I’m not gonna say that I’m the only player… but when you know players like that that can’t do what you can do, you’ve just got to shoot the ball,” Mitchell said at last month’s NBPA Top 100 camp. “I always knew how to shoot but I just never shot, so nobody really knew that I could shoot, so I started shooting and I started getting more points.”
Coming in at #28 in our updated Class of 2017 rankings, Mitchell is one of two nationally-ranked rising seniors already committed to Auburn; he’ll join forces in the SEC with Birmingham native Austin Wiley, one of the nation’s top centers.
A Future150 Elite 24 Camp alumnus in the 8th grade, Davion was selected to the camp all-star team after a dominant weekend. Since then, his basketball career has progressed quite nicely.
With Bruce Pearl entering his third season at the helm, the Tigers have plenty of momentum on the recruiting trail, and Mitchell is excited to be part of building something special on the hardwood at the perennial football powerhouse.
“It feels good, he said. “Especially with top players like Mustapha [Heron], players like Jared [Harper], Austin, and all the players coming in, I feel like we’re building something. Even Coach knows we’re building something, he talks about starting lineups and what we see in the future.”
Standing a strong 6’2” and weighing nearly 200 pounds, Mitchell looks ready-made to step into the SEC and produce. His strength, athletic ability, and elite body control make him a great finisher around the rim even after taking contact, and he’s got a more-than-capable 3-point stroke to keep defenses honest.
For now, though, Mitchell is looking forward to getting back onto the AAU scene this month. Without having to worry about what the future may hold for him as far as college goes, there’s just one thing on his mind.
“I’m just trying to represent Auburn,” he said. “I’m just trying to represent for my college.”
