Birmingham, AL (Future150) -- Future150 hits the road this weekend for its 2nd time out for the Spring viewing periods. Last weekend we were in Louisville, KY watching some of the top players in the Southeast and Midwest compete for the college coaches during the NCAA Live Period.
Lets check out a few guys that will be playing in this weekends 17U Showcase in Birmingham, AL. We are hoping to find some hidden gems looking to play at the next level. The teams that will be participating in the tournament are the Alabama Celtics, Team Grind, Rocket City Suns, West Alabama Lakers and the Shady Grove Raiders.
One of the most underrated players in the state of Alabama is the 2023 6-foot-8 CF Thomas Dowd of Dothan High School and Team Grind. After having a huge high school season where he averaged 19.5 points, 15 rebounds and 3 blocks per game, Dowd has carried over his play having 2 nice showing during the NCAA Live Period. He is a versitale, wiry and long stretch 3-4 who can stretch the floor and score at the rim. His 3-point production has increased from last summer where he shoots it at 40% from beyond the arc. He holds offers from Troy, Alabama State, Samford with high interest from Furman, Tenn Tech, and UNA.
The next player we are expecting big things from and excited to watch is the 2023 CF Nate Lubamba of Grace Baptist Academy in Ocean Springs, MS and playing for the Rocket City Suns out of Huntsville, AL. Lubamba is a 6-foot-6 inch extremely athletic prospect who has a 6'10" wing span that can finish at the rim with anyone. He is plays with a ton of energy, has a high basketball IQ and is a sneaky defender when protecting the rim. He holds a offer from Virginia University of Lynchberg.
A Mississippi native and Team Grind product, 2023 PF MJ Smith is one of the most athletic forwards in the country and from Houston, MS. At 6-foot-7 inches tall and 205 pounds, Smith has the body and athleticism to play D1 basketball. His 40 inch vertical, shot blocking and rebounding are elite level skills that stand out when you see this D1 prospect play. His jump shot has made great strides in the last 12 months and has stretched to the three point line. As his skill development continues to grow look for his stock to rise fast after having a strong showing in the first two NCAA Live Periods averaging 13 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. He holds a offer from Jackson State and receiving high interest from North Florida, Alabama State, and Troy.
The Benjamin Russell high school product who plays for the Alabama Celtics program, 2023 CG Harbson "Quez" Thompson is another diamond in the rough in the state of Alabama. He is 6-foot tall and 170 pounds and use the dribble to create opportunites not only for himself but his teammates. He can score on all three levels and strives in the open floor. His mid range game is what stands out when you watch him play in the half court. He currently holds interest from Shelton, Snead State, Wallace St Enterprise and Chattahoochee State.
When you think under the radar there is one player that comes to mind and thats 2023 PG Keyondre Ford of Hamilton High and West AL Lakers. He is 6-foot and a 165 pounds PG and his game reminds you of a old school point guard who has elite court vision, runs his team and doesn't mind guarding the other teams best player. Scoring in the open floor is where he excels and makes everyone around him better. He is receiving interest from local Juco's and schools at the NAIA level.
The Muscle Shoals product, 2024 F Cedric Summerhill of the Shady Grove Raiders is a name that is on the rise. At 6-foot-5 inches tall, he is long athletic and can score the ball on all three levels. He rebounds the ball well from the wing and loves starting the break. Summerhill's presence on the floor makes his team better through his leadership and basketball IQ. As his skill level increase look for his stock to rise over the next year.
