New York City has a such long and storied history of putting out talented guards. From street ball legends to NBA players, to guys like Lance Stephenson and Isaiah Whitehead, being a high-major guard in NYC is romanticized. Most have been noted for their mix of toughness and flair, something that almost all guards in the area have in spades.
Perhaps no guard personifies the city more this year than Christ the King's Jose Alvarado. The 6-foot Queens native is shouldering heavy expectations this season following the departure of Rawle Alkins, and he's ready to step up to the challenge. Armed with a competitve fire that few players possess, Alvarado knows that he must set the tone for his teammates.
"It's really important, I know that I am one of the leaders on this team and I just need to keep my head up and do other things when my shot isn't falling," he said of his approach to the game.
His mindset is a big reason why high-major programs have begun to turn the heat on his recruitment. Blessed with good speed, great court vision, and the ability to be a great two-way player, it's easy to see why a handful of programs are making an early push for his services.
