Nashville, TN (Future150) -- Vanderbilt's academics speak for itself, as it is one of the premiere academic institutions in the South. The basketball program isn't too shabby, either.
Saturday, both groups got better, as Darius Thompson, a shooting guard from Blackman High School (TN), made his verbal commitment to Kevin Stallings and the Commodores.
"The education you get from Vanderbilt is and I wasn't choosing a school just based on basketball. The academic side was a big factor too," he told Future150.com following his commitment.
Nevertheless, the team also played a part in the 6-foot-5 guard's decision.
"I feel like I fit into Vanderbilt's style of play," he explained. "I have a huge respect for Coach [Kevin] Stallings. He is a great coach and is great at developing players."
Hailing from Murfreesboro, Thompson won't have far to travel to go to school. He will play in front of family and friends for the next four years.
"It feels great [to stay home]. It means a lot to play in front of all the people that support me now."
Thompson chose Vanderbilt over a late surging Tennessee and Auburn.
He is a three-star according to Future150.com.
