Los Angeles, CA (Future150) -- Despite being weak in the college ranks, the West Coast still has premium basketball talent throughout the Pacific in high school. The state of California in particular continues to produce great depth at the high school level, and Darin Johnson (Class of 2013, Frankin HS, Cal.) is a prime example.
Johnson, ranked 75th overall by Future150, is one of the better underrated players out west. Nevertheless, the only direction he can go is up at this point.
A combo guard, many have compared Johnson to the likes of Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook.
“I would say Russell Westbrook, too,” the 6-foot-3 guard began. “I am a good athlete, and I am explosive like him. Our ability to play different positions is similar.”
Johnson currently holds an offer from San Francisco, but he is also hearing from much of the Pac-12, WCC, and Mountain West. Boise State, Santa Clara, UC-Santa Barbara and others are showing the most interest to this point.
“I’m still wide open right now, but I am planning to take unofficial visits to Nevada and St. Mary’s this summer.”
While the campuses will have an effect on his decision, there are a few other factors that will go into the junior’s state of mind when it comes to making a college decision.
“Style of play is big for me, but I’m also looking at my relationship with the coaching staff,” Johnson explained.
However, a college decision is still in the back of Johnson’s mind. Instead, he plans to work on his game and continue to thrive in transition.
“I want to work on my jump shot and defense. I’m good in transition, but I can always improve on finishing at the rim, especially with bigger defenders.”
Keep an eye out for Johnson on the West Coast as he continues his growth as a player and prospect.
