HAYWARD, CA (Future150) -- Damari Milstead is one of the top point guards in the state of California for the class of 2017.
Milstead can score at the rim with both hands and can also get it done from three-point range. He uses his controlled handles and scoring ability to help free up his teammates. The poised guard is averaging just less than 15 points per game, along with five assists and about four rebounds per game. He is a great leader and understands the game very well for such a young player.
The 6’1” leader has already received many offers from division 1 schools, including Cal, New Mexico State, Loyola Marymount, Hawaii, Montana, and Washington State.
Last year, as a freshman at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, California, Milstead helped lead the Mariners to the State Championship game, where the Bishop Montgomery Knights finally ended their long run.
“My goal this year is to win a state championship," said Milstead. "We made it to state last year and anything less than that would be a disappointment to me.”
Although he had such a successful freshman year with the Mariners, he uses their loss in the state championship as a lesson.
“One thing I have learned from last year is never get too high or too low in a game,” he said. “Basketball is a game of runs and you always want to keep your composure and never break down, which is something we did in the State Championship.”
In the off-season, Milstead plays AAU for the Oakland Soldiers. The Soldiers are consistently one of the best teams in the country. Between helping lead the Mariners to the State Championship game and playing for the Oakland Soldiers, Milstead understands the formula to win basketball games and is very good at helping his team do so.
Damari Milstead has a very bright future ahead of him both on and off the court. When asked about what his goals are for the future, he explained that they involve both school and basketball.
“I want to get my degree and I want to play in the NCAA tournament.”
