Philadelphia, PA (Future150) -- After what was considered a down year in point guard prospects with the 2015 class, the class of 2016 looks to be one of the best in the past decade. While 2017 may not quite match up to 2016 in star power and depth, there are still plenty of talented point guards in the class.
Philadelphia has a long history of churning out tough and productive lead guards, and Team Final's Daron Russell fits that mold. Despite standing at just 5-foot-10, Russell was arguably one of the biggest producers this July.
"I just want to do whatever it takes to win, whether it's getting a steal or hitting a big shot, I'll do whatever my team needs me to do to get the W," said Russell.
A cat-quick lead guard, Russell uses his speed to get to the rim and finish or get into the lane and kick out to open teammates. His speed also allows him to harrass his man and force turnovers.
Before the final live period, Russell held offers from Binghampton, La Salle, and Temple. After a great showing at Elevate Hoops' Summer Finale, he picked up offers from VCU, Penn, Delaware and Hartford as well.
Temple offered shortly after their team camp and will be looking to keep him in his home city. Location won't play a factor though.
"I don't care if it's on the west coast or if it's here in Philadelphia, I just want to end up at the school that is the best fit for me," he said.
Russell will visit VCU this weekend, starting this afternoon. One would think that he would fit new head coach Will Wade's system perfectly.
