Kingsport, TN (Future150) -- In an age where basketball factories and pseudo-schools are popping up all over the Eastern and Southern edges of our great nation one academically-inclined basketball destination is doing things correctly.
Six months ago nobody knew John Fulkerson. From a town of 50,000 people in northeastern Tennessee, Fulkerson elected to try out The Christ School.
Midway through April nine schools are interested and two schools have offered Fulkerson.
Appalachian State offered Fulkerson based on his winter work and just yesterday USC-Upstate joined the club.
"ETSU offered," said Fulkerson. "Their head coach got fired. USC-Upstate just offered last night."
In the matter of weeks Fulkerson's offers went from one to two to one to two. Which team will become number three?
"I heard from Navy, App. State, Gardner-Webb, Furman," said Fulkerson.
In the last two weeks it picked up even more. USC-Upstate, Tennessee Tech, MTSU, Radford, and Samford joined the mix.
John Fulkerson fielded a call from Tennessee Tech during which they expressed an interest in meeting him and kickstarting the recruitment process.
Home Away from Home
Alumni from The Christ School include the NCAA Champion Plumlee brothers (Miles, Mason, Marshall). As a rotation guy for Duke University, Marshall Plumlee played nine minutes of the recent NCAA Title game.
With his newfound offers as the building blocks, Fulkerson could also play in an NCAA Tournament someday.
He competes with the Tennessee Bobcats outside of scholastic competition.
"We are doing good," said Fulkerson. "We got fourth place in our first tournament. We went 3-2 last week in Atlanta."
A 6'8" combo forward, Fulkerson just returned from a hyperextended knee injury.
"I was iffy going back," said Fulkerson. "I did better than I thought I would.
He was out three weeks before the Friday game. It was sore the next couple days after the tournament ended Sunday. Wednesday evening he said it felt fine.
"He takes the ball off the backboard and starts the break," said AAU Coach Kevin Feltner. "He can really attack if the opponent's play a zone."
Combining Fulkerson's height and skill set results in a potential high major talent.
"He blocked 22 shots in five games," said Coach Feltner. "He was probably the most electric dunker in the tournament."
College coaches switched from mildly interested to sincerely eager when Fulkerson started to knock down the outside shot.
The shooting skills are there, but he can be too team-oriented. Coach Feltner is working to instill more offensive aggression in Fulkerson.
The Next Home
Fulkerson has exactly a year to decide upon his next home away from home. The Appalachian State offer is intriguing.
"I took an unofficial to Appalachian State," said Fulkerson. "That was in March. I liked it. The arena is very nice and the lockers rooms are nice. The coaches are great too."
Fulkerson was the fourth Class of 2016 forward offer from Appalachian State's first-year coach, Jim Fox.
Grant Williams, Isaiah Whaley, and Matthew Elmore also can select Appy State at any time. Incidentally, Elmore added a Drexel offer days ago.Elmore and Whaley are exclusively power forwards, while Williams and Fulkerson float between the traditional forward labels.
The Class of 2016 is especially deep at the small forward position. Fulkerson really can play the 3/4, but handles well enough to evolve into a straight small forward. With added strength he opens up the possibility of playing a fleet four.
When John moved to The Christ School he moved right into Head Coach Fox's wheelhouse. The former Davidson-assistant is attempting to build his program by starting with recruits in the talent-rich state of North Carolina.
Fulkerson's ambitious transfer began the offer parade. And now recruiters are joining with glee.
