Bronx, NY (Future150) -- It's still early in the season, but Queens High School of Teaching looks like they're going to be serious contenders in the PSAL this season. The double AA program is a veteran group led by wing C.J. Kelly. The Long Island native has always had a decent amount of potential, but has taken his game to another level this year.
QHST is currently undefeated, and with Kelly boasting averages of 28 points, 9 boards, and 5 assists a game, it appears they are going to be a tough matchup for anyone in the city.
"I'm just looking at it as that I'm uncommitted and I want to win a city championship and pick up offers, and I'm going to do whatever I can to make that happen," said Kelly after their win over Archbishop Stepanic.
Rutgers and St. John's were in attendence, something that Kelly noticed.
"It means a lot to me that they came out to see me, hopefully my recruitment takes off a bit and it hits that level," he said.
Right now, his recruitment is still at the low-major level. Niagara, Norfolk State, Stony Brook, Hofstra and Iona have all offered and are actively recruiting him. The 6-foot-5 swingman is finally tapping into his full potential though, and has improved greatly as a passer over the past year.
A couple of tests will give schools the chance to see Kelly against big time competiton in the coming weeks. QHST will take on fellow Queens contender John Bowne on January 5th, and then CHSAA powerhouse Archbishop Molloy on January 8th.
One thing is for sure, Kelly will be one to keep an eye on moving forward.
