Decatur, AL (Future150) -- West Morgan High School (AL) is no stranger to excellent guard play. Current Samford University freshman Brandon Roberts had a prestigious career at the school before picking the Bulldogs over Auburn, Mississippi State, and Murray State, among others. As a senior last year, he averaged an impressive 32.5 points per game, scoring 1,006 points in his senior season alone.
Now that he is off to the SoCon, West Morgan is looking for a young prospect to help fill the void left behind. That player could very well be 2018 point guard Braxton Holland.
The 5-foot-6 lead guard is one of the most impressive ball-handlers the Future150 staff saw over the summer, where he emerged at our Elite 24 Camp, featuring the best talent in the country for prospects in the classes of 2017, 2018, and 2019.
By the end of the weekend, he was named a Top 20 All-Star, and had the camp buzzing with his creativity and shifty play.
Now, as only an eighth grader, he is already playing junior varsity during the preseason, with hopes of getting some varsity minutes sooner rather than later. When it comes to his strengths on the floor, this is what Braxton had to tell me.
"Right now, my ball handling skills, my court vision, and my shooting are my best strengths."
In regard to his goals for the upcoming season, he had this to say, "I want to get a solid GPA, dominate every team, and to play some varsity basketball this season as an 8th grader."
That's quite the task, but it doesn't faze Holland, who knows that he has a long way to go in order to become a complete player.
"I am working on my defense and playing without the ball in my hands," he told me yesterday.
When he's not working on his game with his high school team, he's working tirelessly with his trainer, always looking to improve his skillset.
West Morgan fans have a lot to look forward to with Braxton Holland, and their backcourt looks to be in the perfectly capable hands of the young stud point guard.
