Birmingham, AL (Future150) -- Future150 held its 15th annual Alabama Main Event in Birmingham, AL this past weekend at GW Carver and Parker High Schools. The tournament featured some of the best independent teams from the Southeast. Future150 was out looking for college level prospects and thats exactly what it found in the 17-Under division.
Let's take a look at who shined over the weekend and what some of the skills these 2023 players put on display Saturday and Sunday afternoons. We will also post the All-Tournament team as well in the recap.
The first prospect on the list comes from the 17-Under Champions Team Grind based out of Birmingham, AL. 2023 CF Thomas Dowd out of Dothan High stands 6-foot-7 inchs and 205 pounds with a 6'9" wing span. He's a highly skilled combo forward who can guard multiple position, play multiple position and scores on all three levels. His ability to shoot the three ball was on full display all weekend where he was scorching the nets. He averaged 19 Points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks on the weekend. He holds offers from Troy, Alabama State, Samford and UNA.
The Huntsville product of Team Elusive 2023 CG Deavious Woods led his team to the championship game. He is a elite ball handler, slasher who loves attacking off the bounce and sneaky athlete who can finish above the rim. After watching this prospect this weekend, there isn't any reason why he will not be playing at the next level. He put on a show all weekend long. He averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds on the weekend.
2023 PF MJ Smith of Team Grind was a highlight waiting to happen all weekend long. This 6-foot-7 inch moster was destroying the rim with high flying dunks and rebound put backs. Smith led the tournament in blocks where he averaged 5.5 per game to go along with his 17 points and 11 rebounds. His overall ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor helped his team crusise to the 17U championship in blowout fashion. Smith is receiving interest from Troy, Jackson State, Alabama State, North Florida to name a few.
2022 F Malik Hardin of Team Elusive is a certified big man who might be undersized but can score the ball in multiple ways. He's a force on the low post as well as can face up and put the ball on the floor. He controls the paint as well as crash the boards aggressively. He led his team with 26 points and 12 rebounds in the semi-final game which was the reason his team advanced.
2023 SG Ian Johnigan of the Rocket City Suns has an outstanding weekend shooting the ball from beyond the arch. He moves well with out the ball in his hands and can make plays when he has too. Basketball IQ, team player and elite shooter are three attributes that come to mind when you describe this prospects game. He scored 21 points on 6-8 from three in their bracket play loss.
2024 PG Jabari Hill of Alphia Elite is a 5-foot-11 inch lead guard who makes their teams engine run. He's quick, smart and can get anywhere on the floor off the dribble. Hill's on ball defense and play making abilities are what stood out this weekend and he helped his team compete at a high level. When you think point guard should be a picture of Hill should be what is staring back at you. He averaged 10 points 6 assist and 2 steals on the weekend.
2023 PG Mykel Johnson of Hurricane Crossova's is a shifty guard who keeps the ball on the string. He like to penetrate the defense and finish at the basket. Mykel can create his own shot and plays great on ball defense that helps him get steals. He averaged 14 points, 5 assists and 3 steals on the weekend. This playmaking lead guard is fun to watch if you like a fast paced game.
2023 G/F Zach Lamey of North Alabama Elite is a 6-foot-4 inch wing who likes to be a spot up shooter. He can score on all three levels and is at his best when attacking from the wing. Rebounding the ball at a high level, guarding mulitple position and making the right play for his team is what stands out when you watch this prospect play.
2023 CG Cam Collins of TVE Wolves likes to run the floor transition and use his athleticism to attack the basket for easy finishes. He is a big time player who plays with a lot of energy. Collin's was one of the better 2 way players we saw on the weekend. The more aggressive he plays the better he looks especially in the open floor. His court vision, unselfishness and 3-point shot making abilities are what will land him at the next level.
2023 CG Austin Cross of Team Grind had a rock solid all around performance this weekend. He can play either guard positions on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. This Troy, AL native is at his best when coming off screens, catch and shoot, or knocking down the three ball in transistion. Don't let his skill set fool you either he is a sneaky attacker and finishes well at the rim when opportunities arise. Cross averaged 14 points and 5 rebouns this weekend and helped lead his team to the championship.
2023 PG William Lloyd of North Alabama Elite is a 6-foot-1 inch point guard who commands the offense at a very high level. Scoring well at all three levels and playing aggressive defense really sets the guard apart from others at his position in his class. Truly a vocal leader on and off the court. Basketball IQ is high for the high academic young man out of Briarwood Christian High.
2023 F Tobias Stoutermire of the Alabama Defenders is a stretch forward that uses his size and length to finish aggressively around the rim. He has a soft touch and good footwork around that helps him score inside the paint. He makes his presence known on both sides of the ball with physical play and active hands. Joseph has soft touch around the rim and is a consistent finisher.
2023 SG Tyler Horne of Team Elusive is a scoring machine who can score in bunches and that was on display in the championship game. He went 10 of 11 from the three point line for 30 points to keep his team close. Horne's game can be summed up best by the phrase "Catch and Shoot." His rock solid perfomance all weekend lands him on the list of break out players to watch the rest of the summer.
2023 PG TJ Purifoy of HCBC out of Birmingham, AL hada nice weekend running the show for his team. He's a do it all type player who makes everyone around him better and can score on all three levels. His leadership traits, basketall IQ and play making abilities are what stand out. He averaged 15 points and 4 assists on the weekend.
2024 SG Jerimiah Bowman of AR Elite out of the East Alabama area had a nice weekend scoring the rock from all three levels. He can make plays when he has the ball as well as knock down the open jumper. Team player, coachable and shot maker are what stand out when you watch this prospect play. He averaged 15 points per game and 5 rebounds.
