Huntsville, AL (Future150) -- The Alabama State Playoffs in basketball started this week with all teams hoping to win a state championship during the CoVid Pandemic.  During these rough times, sports has been a healthy outlet for both players and parents.  The state of Alabama might be a football state when it comes to high school sports, but basketball has made a big move in the past 5 years.

The young talent in the class of 2023 has caused quite a stir over the past 2 weeks.  There have been several players in the class receiving basketball scholarship offers from multiple schools.  This week has been no different.

The #1 player in the 2023 Class according to Future150, PG RJ Johnson of Grissom High School in Huntsville picked up his first SEC offer from the LSU Tigers and Head Coach Will Wade.  Assistant Coach Bill Armstrong has been his lead recruitier and made the offer on Monday.

When asked what he thought about receiving his first SEC offer from LSU Monday, Johnson went on to say " I am blessed to receive my first SEC offer from LSU.  Coach Wade is a good coach and I love their style of play.  They are always competing for SEC Championships and have sent several players to the NBA in the last 2 years. I know SF Trendon Watford from Mountain Brook is there now and playing well."

Johnson was also asked what he hopes to accomplish this summer during the AAU season. "I have to continue to get better every day and work hard.  I also want to play against the best at my position and prove I belong. I am on a mission this summer. Its great to see my hard work is finally paying off."

The Huntsville native also recieved an offer from the Samford Bulldogs and Head Coach Bucky McMillan on Tuesday as well.  When asked what that offer meant to him, Johnson stated that "I was really excited to get his first instate offer and that he loves Samford's style of play.  They play fast and are extremely well coached. I feel like their style fits me well."

At 6-foot-3.5 inches tall, 195 pounds and a 6'8.5" wing span, Johnson has all the intangeables to be a difference maker when the ball is in his hands.  It's easy to see why he's the best player on the floor due to his athleticism, elite court vision, unselfishness and the ability to shoot the ball on all three levels.  The sky is the limit and this is only the first of high major offers coming in the near future for this young man.
