Jersey City, NJ (Future150) -- The name Justyn Mutts may not be one familar to recruitniks just yet, but it appears that it's only a matter of time before that changes.
The Richland, New Jersey product has started his junior campaign on the right foot and is turning heads with his strong play. As one of the leeaders on a St. Augustine squad that may just be the best in southern New Jersey.
Mutts is a sterotypical combo-forward. At 6-foot-6, he is a little undersized to play power forward, but also lacks the perimeter skills to play on the wing currently. Despite his short comings, Mutts has become arguably one of the most efficient players in the state. He is a great athlete with a fantastic motor, making him one of the best rebounders in the area.
"I bring rebounding and defense to the floor, I'm working on my jump shot and my handle and trying to work my way out to the perimeter for this summer and next season," Mutts said of his game.
Things appear to be picking up on the recruiting front for Mutts a bit as well. He holds offers from Monmouth and Chatanooga, but has been fielding calls from St. Joe's and Temple a bit as well. At this point he appears to be one of Monmouth's top targets in the 2017 class.
"I'm not hoping to hear from any one program in particular, but any school that does get in contact with me, I'd be excited to hear from," said Mutts.
Playing with a loaded Team Final group on the EYBL circuit again this season should only give Mutts more exposure. While he's not as far along at the same stage, his game and projection resembles former Team Final forward Ahmad Gilbert's.
Only time and his work ethic will determine if he can fully transition to the perimeter and become a high-major player like Gilbert has, but Mutts is certainly one sleeper to keep an eye on moving into the AAU season.
