Nashville, TN (Future150) -- Coming into the Future150 National Camp, not many outside of the DC/Maryland/Virginia area (commonly known as the DMV) had heard of big man Ryan Gomes of Baltimore Friends Academy (MD).
Fast forward a month, and it appears that Gomes is on the cusp of a major breakout year. Due to transfer rules at Friends, Ryan will not be able to suit up during the high school season. Despite that fact, colleges have begun to show interest.
Nebraska, Georgetown, and North Carolina State have been the most recent schools to join in on keeping tabs on the big, joining Maryland, George Mason, Colgate, Northeastern, and Wichita State. While he has yet to score his first division one offer, it would seem that it is a matter of time before it happens.
It is for good reason too. Gomes has proven time and again that he is an elite level defender. He is also a fundamentaly sound big that runs the floor well and attacks the glass. His ability to pass out of the low post allows him to hurt teams that double down on him. He can be as good as he wants to be and will be a monster when he becomes more aggressive.
It is unclear who he will play AAU with this summer but whatever program he goes to will add a quality big man. Gomes was a standout at the National Camp, making the Top 20 All-Star Game and showing how good he can be.
"It was just a great experience for me. It showed me what guys around the country can do and how I need to keep working to get better," he said.
Look for Gomes to break out on the AAU circuit this spring and summer. At 6-foot-9 with the ability to be a lockdown defender and a burgeoning offensive game, it's only a matter of time before major schools make him a priority in his class.
