Birmingham, AL (Future150) -- Samford continues to keep the under-the-radar kids within the state lines of Alabama. Last year, the Bulldogs convinced Brandon Roberts to stay home, and this year, Gerald Smith has opted to stay home.

Smith, a 6-foot-4 wing, gave his commitment to Bennie Seltzer and the Bulldogs on Wednesday.

“It was a second home to me,” he told Future150.com. “I have a really close relationship with the coaching staff and the guys are really cool.”

Smith proved to be a stat-stuffer during the season, as he averaged 23 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. He also scored 2,000 points in his high school career.

“I’m a combo guard. I can play the 1, 2, or 3. I score well from the mid-range and I’m super athletic.”

Several programs acknowledged Smith’s potential to improve, including Alabama. He officially visited the Crimson Tide last weekend. Mercer and Wofford were also in play, but those planned visits were cancelled.

Smith was Samford’s second commitment of the day. Junior College wing Jamal Shabazz committed and signed with the Bulldogs earlier on Wednesday. They also signed guard Marcus Johnson.

Smith plans to sign with Samford on Monday.
