Dallas, TX (Future150) -- Texas continues to take great strides in basketball, as more and more elite players have emerged from the Lonestar state. With names like Marcus Smart, Andrew and Aaron Harrison, Julius Randle, and Justise Winslow, the state is arguably the best basketball state in the country right now.
However, talented prospects are still quite unknown in the large state. In fact, CYM Academy (Tex.) forward Austin Weiher may be one of the best kept secrets in the Dallas area, if not Texas.
Standing at 6-foot-8 and 210-pounds, Weiher burst onto the national scene with 20 points and 20 rebounds against La Lumiere in November. Since then, college coaches have been very intrigued about him.
“Austin has offers from Sam Houston State, Eastern Michigan, and Georgia State,” CYM Academy coach Mathis Crowder told Future150.com. “He is also receiving high interest from USF, Utah, Washington State, LSU, Texas A&M, SMU, Texas Tech, Texas State, and Loyola.”
Despite having coaches in to see him and his teammates each game, Weiher is not interested in which schools show up to evaluate his talents.
“My coach doesn’t really tell me who comes to see me play. I don’t even pay attention to who is watching. I just go out and have fun and play. It’s what I do,” Weiher explained.
A true combo forward, Weiher is extremely dangerous against opposing teams. With his versatility and quickness, he can take advantage of slower post players and move them to the perimeter; if guards have the duty of taking him on, he uses his length and strength around the goal.
“I think I do really well at balancing my game. I can do a little bit of everything. I would say I need to work on my defense, though.”
“Attacking people off the dribble is my strength,” he noted.
Because Weiher is taking the recruiting process very slowly right now, he has not paid much attention to a college home for the future. Nevertheless, he has one main factor that will go into his criteria for a selected college.
“I’m looking for a coach that will help develop me and get me to the next level. It’s always been a dream to play in the NBA for me.”
Weiher will be in attendance for the Future150 Southwest Main Event this upcoming weekend. Expect this to just be the start of a big AAU season for the junior.
