Bakersfield, CA (Future150) -- Future150 Basketball made the trip out to Southern California to attend the 2nd annual West Coast Super Showcase this past weekend. The event brought a wide range of talented players into the gym from unsigned seniors all the way through to the class of 2019. The talented prospects showed off their ability in front of several scouts and evaluators.
The event was held in the newly renovated Bakersfield College gymnasium and drew over one hundred players. The West Coast Super Showcase was directed by former Adidas National Camp Coach Joey Velasquez and longtime skills development coach Ladell Hill.
The following players stood out from the rest over the course of the showcase’s events and deserve to be recognized for their skill and ability.
Bailey Stout – 2016 PG, Mater Dei High School (CA)
The 6’1” lead guard played steady over the course of the showcase. Stout stood out from the rest of the point guards at the event because of his vision and creativity. He made passes that many others could not have, yet he was still under control. Offensively, the freshman guard also played well. He was able to beat his defender off the dribble consistently and shot the ball well from deep. Stout is not a high level athlete but he works hard and has a great basketball IQ. He is definitely a player to keep an eye on from the 2016 class.
Marvin Timothy – 2014 SF, Franklin High School (CA)
Timothy is your prototypical combo forward. The rising junior has good size at 6’7” and is a solid athlete. Defensively, Timothy stood out from the rest of the forwards because of his versatility. He has long arms and runs the floor like a guard. The forward was able to rebound out of his area and defend the rim well. Offensively, the junior’s game is still raw; he showed a decent low post game though. He got position well and scored on smaller defenders consistently. Timothy has a ton of potential, but he must continue to refine his game and develop a more consistent outside shot to keep defenders honest.
LJ Reed – 2015 SG, Cosumnes Oaks High School (CA)
When Reed was on, he was arguably one of the top two players at the West Coast Super Showcase. The biggest knock on the sophomore scoring guard was his inconsistent shooting over the course of three games, however. Reed was resilient though, he played solid defense, ran point for a good deal of several games and used is 6’4” frame to get double figure rebounds in another game. The shooting guard has a well-rounded game for his age group, he sees the floor well and uses angles to get into the paint and score at the rim. Reed has a high upside and should gain plenty of college attention this summer when he plays with the PHPS Renegades on the club circuit.
Rae Jackson – 2013 CG, El Cerrito High School (CA)
Jackson was the most outstanding player from this weekend’s showcase. Even though he is slightly undersized for the shooting guard position at 6’2”, he plays much bigger than he actually is. The unsigned senior guard scored the ball at a high rate and in a variety of ways. He used a quick first step to beat his defender off the dribble to get into the paint, but because he gets a high lift on his jump shot he was also able to shoot over bigger defenders as well. Jackson has good form on his jump shot and accurate range out to the three point line. Showcase or not, his shot selection was questionable at times, but Jackson is a talented player that will help a team at the collegiate level. An early season verbal commit to San Jose State, Jackson’s recruitment has been reopened due to coaching changes at the institution. He is now hearing from several division one programs from across the West Coast.
Jachai Taylor – 2015 SF, Waukegan High School (IL)
Taylor, who made the trip all the way from Chicago, played well all day and showed why his potential is so high. Taylor is slender, but has great size at 6’6” and is a good athlete already. As he fills out, Taylor could develop into a mid to high major small forward. He has a good looking jump shot and range out past eighteen feet. The rising sophomore played a good deal of point forward in multiple games on Saturday and looked good in the open court with the ball. Taylor has the makings of a high impact small forward; he has size, skill and athleticism.
Colin Slater – 2016 PG, Clovis North High School (CA)
Often matched up against experienced upper-class guards, Slater showed a good deal of fight and competitiveness all day. The freshman point guard had one of the highest motors of any player at the showcase. Slater is a strong defender that bothered anyone he was matched up against. At 6’0” with a strong build, Slater is physically able to play against just about anyone. Slater stood out because of his competitiveness, but the guard is very skilled as well. He pushed the ball in transition and scored in the paint at will. He has good form on his jump shot and was consistent shooting the ball all day long. Slater is a good leader and controlled the tempo of the game like a point guard should.
Others that impressed:
Lunden Taylor – 2018 5’6” PG, Clovis Online Middle School (CA)
Jericho Avery – 2014 6’6” SF, Laguna Creek High School (CA)
Maalik Hazziez – 2014 6’8” PF, Foothills High School (CA)
Chris Ross – 2013 6’5” SG, Stockdale High School (CA)
Trevon Greenberry – 6’2” SG, Edison High School (CA)
Kurtis McCoy – 6’4” Wing, Roosevelt High School (CA)
